Amazon Just Opened Its Back Office to AI Agents — And Claude Got the First Key

For years, Amazon has guarded its seller dashboards tightly — every listing update, every inventory check, every ad tweak done manually through Amazon's own interface. That's now changing.

Amazon has started a beta program letting outside AI agents operate inside its seller ecosystem, beginning with Anthropic's Claude for U.S. merchants.

Here's what's actually shifting:

→ Sellers can delegate repetitive back-office work — updating product listings, checking performance data, managing operational tasks — to an AI agent instead of navigating dashboards by hand
→ This is a genuine first for Amazon, a company that has historically kept its merchant tools closed off from third-party automation
→ It reflects a broader shift already playing out across software: instead of humans clicking through interfaces, companies are exposing their systems directly to AI agents that act on a user's behalf
→ That shift raises real operational questions — authentication, permission scope, transaction limits, and who's accountable when an autonomous agent makes a costly mistake with write access to a live business

That last point is the one worth sitting with. Giving an AI agent read access to your sales data is one thing. Giving it write access to change your listings, adjust pricing, or manage inventory is a different level of trust entirely — and Amazon choosing Claude first, in a beta, with US-only merchants, suggests even Amazon is treating this as an experiment, not a finished product.

The bigger pattern here matters beyond Amazon. Software interfaces built for humans are slowly being rebuilt for agents. The company whose tools agents can trust — and whose agents businesses can trust with real operational access — may end up mattering more than who has the flashiest model benchmark.

Would you trust an AI agent with write access to your own seller account yet, or is that still a step too far?
