Amazon Is Reportedly Bidding $7 Billion for Decart, a Startup That Helps AI Run on Any Chip

Amazon is in talks to buy Decart for around $7 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report on October 11. A deal could come within days, unless talks collapse or another buyer steps in. Nothing has been confirmed by either company.

imageDecart doesn’t make flashy chatbots. It makes the plumbing underneath them.

→ Founded in 2023 by Israeli engineers Dean and Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, the company’s core product is a software stack that lets developers move AI workloads between different chips without rewriting everything
→ It raised $300M at a roughly $4B valuation in May, and has raised over $400M in total from Sequoia, Benchmark, Radical Ventures, and Nvidia’s venture arm. A $7B price would be about a 75% jump in under five months
→ Amazon already knows the company well. AWS gave Decart early access to its Trainium3 chip, and Decart’s video model ran live on it at re:Invent in December 2025, with Amazon claiming 4x faster frame generation at half the cost of GPUs
→ This isn’t the first bid. Nvidia reportedly pursued it first, then Anthropic entered talks at roughly $6B and walked away after weeks of diligence. The reports don’t say why

The reason this matters is simple. AI’s biggest hidden cost isn’t only the models, it’s being locked into one chip vendor. If your workloads only run well on one company’s hardware, that company sets your price and your supply. Software that lets you shift between chips changes that balance of power.

For Amazon, that’s a direct strategic fit. It built Trainium to compete with Nvidia, but customers have to be willing to move. Owning the software that makes moving easy would lower that barrier.

One open question: would Decart stay available across all chips after an acquisition, or quietly tilt toward Trainium? An acquirer’s incentives and a neutral tool’s value don’t always line up.

At $7B, this would be one of Amazon’s largest acquisitions in years, for a company most people outside AI infrastructure have never heard of. The next phase of the AI race may be fought less over who builds the best model and more over who controls the layer that decides where it runs.

Do you think chip-agnostic software stays truly neutral once a cloud giant owns it?
