educational software
I have a lifelong love of learning. And I use quite a few learning platforms to keep me going. I have started writing some of my own.
One for my own use is code review, which makes Parsons problems out of code you have already written. The aim is revise more quickly and frequently; and so retain more information.
My other main projects are maths-how2 and maths-elo -- that really needs a name-change!
I teach maths to a wide range of students in college and I use both of those to help generate questions for practise.
What I really want is a program that can guide the student from basic knowledge to genuine understanding. In education we talk about Bloom's taxonomy.
Genuine maths is not done by rote. If everytime you see a problem you only need to pull a method off the shelf and "do this, do that, there's your answer" then you are not doing maths. This is too mechanical, though it can be a place to start.
I am only in the early stages of writing the program I want. Currently: it merely tests the user and tries to rate their ability while at the same time rating the questions. Eventually, and I haven't figured out how, I want the computer to figure out questions in new topics that the student hasn't seen yet but will be able to analyse and solve.
