Cubic Color Confusion Demo

Intro

Welcome back to another indie game demo review! Today we have Cubic Color Confusion, try saying that 10x fast XD.

I originally discovered this game and the developer, eyesolated, through the Indie Game Joe Discord server. eyesolated was looking for feedback on his Steam capsule art, and the next thing I knew, I was playing the demo of his game. The first thing that stood out to me was the music. I had no clue it was going to be a whole bop and a half. I could listen to these music tracks for hours!

Okay, so, in this game, you have 3 color-coded cubes that change the color of the floor tiles. The green cube creates blue tiles, the red cube makes green tiles, and the blue cube makes red tiles. Your goal is to get the correct colored cube to its matching record, which are scattered around the board. Thinking and careful planning are in order, as cubes can only move on blank tiles or tiles matching the cube's color. Over time, the puzzles get increasingly difficult, and unfortunately for me, I got stuck on a puzzle and ended my playthrough.

But I had a really enjoyable time playing and, of course, listening to an amazing soundtrack! Music tracks from ArtariBeatz and Reviii. In my YouTube video, link posted below, I had to switch out the music because it's hard to edit in-game sound and music if I want to speed up the video.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • The music is a bop and a half! A cool and relaxing hip-hop beat that gets caught in your head.

  • You can make your own custom playlist! Unfortunately, I didn't have any music, so I couldn't try out this feature.

  • The neon-colored start menu. I really like the neon and club aesthetic the game is hinting toward. I would love to see more neon signs and club environments.

Cons:

  • The sound effect when the cube can't move onto a tile is a bit jarring.

  • The level design looks repetitive. You have the same grayish border, the same color tiles, blank, red, green, and blue, and the same-colored records. I would've liked to see the levels be more inspired and exciting to play in. Perhaps in some levels, you could change the color and/or effects of the cubes. How cool would it be if one of the cubes had elemental powers? Like, one cube creates fire tracks, while another washes the fire away with water. The tiles could even have traps and/or enemies that spawn in. Now the level feels a lot more exciting and rewarding to play through.

Suggestions for Improvement

  • It's an interesting puzzle concept, having different colored cubes that can change the color of the tiles, but right now, it might be a bit boring-looking for players to want to play and try out. It could be helpful to push this concept further with power-ups, enemies, special tile effects, and more.

  • Soften and/or change the sound effect for when a cube can't move onto a tile. Maybe use a more visual cue instead of a sound.

  • I think, if possible, the game would benefit from some sort of story mode to keep players engaged and excited to get to the next level.

  • Lean more into a club background and aesthetic for the environment design.

Summary:

Cubic Color Confusion is a puzzle game with an amazing soundtrack and a simple yet hard-to-master concept of having different colored cubes that can change the color of the tiles. However, I feel this game could push itself much further by adding more power-ups, enemies, special tile effects, and maybe even a story mode as well. What do you guys think?
