Dungeons and Dragons 5e Magic Orbs for a magic shop
A completely randomised magic item creation guide for what I made for my D&D campaign. These items are meant to be magical orbs your players can attune to and each take half an attunement slot. You may change the mechanics for your capaign however you wish, of course.
Here is how it goes! You have 3 types of orbs, each with their own chances of having a bad effect/curse and how much it costs + the cost of lowering the chance (by 5%) of it having a bad effect:
1. Minor Effect (1 effect, 50gp 5% chance of bad effect)
2. Medium effect (2 effects 150gp 10% chance of bad effect, lower it with 50gp)
3. Major effect (3 effects 500gp 15% chance of bad effect, lower it with 75gp)
For each orb, you roll a d100 first to see if it has a negative effect. Then, for each effect you roll on the first table. So, let's take a medium orb as an example. Let's say I rolled a 3 on the d100, so now it has 2 good and 1 bad effect. I roll a d10 on the first table for the first effect. I get a 5, that's a save effect. Go down to the table below and roll on a 1-5 column a d20. Let's imagine I rolled an 8. +2 to Con saves. Wonderful! Then I roll the d10 again and I get a 1. I get an abillity bonus enhancement. Roll a d12 and I get a 10. Charisma goes up by 2! Gosh this person is lucky. Now to the negative effect. Go own to the bottom of the file and roll a d12. Let's say I got a 6. "You roll minimum damage on your first attack in combat". Could be worse. So, you item ended up boosting someone's con saves and their charisma score, but every battle's first round, they do minimum damage. Here comes the fun twist! You DON'T have to tell your player the negative effect of the orb, you can just make a note of it for yourself. I told them, because I'm nice (too nice), but you don't have to.
And that it how you create the orbs. I feel that it is a little bit over-powered, so making it take 1 attunement slot and maybe increase the price might be better if you are playing a more difficult and low magic setting, but overall I think this is a fun little addition to players that enjoy rolling dice.
Have fun with it!
