Software Development in 24

Sharing something fun to keep us fresh and excited about security.

https://youtu.be/GuJ5UuknsHU?feature=shared talks about how an individual was able to find the kill screen in Tetris. For those who don't know what a "kill screen" is: "A kill screen is a screen that prevents progress from the player. The screens in some games stop the game with gibberish or otherwise impossible figures". In order to find the kill screen in Tetris, individuals had to attempt different techniques and applied math in order to "beat" the game.

When it comes to the software products we develop, we have to consider ways that individuals are going to use the software. At times, this includes the product's lifespan. Will people want to use it in 10 years and will there be a platform that will support the software in 10 years. Even better, will there be techniques engineering teams will have to consider when it comes to the security and privacy of people involved.

Security is a journey and not a destination. In the 34+ years I have been exposed to technology, the only thing that has remained the same is "change is constant". Learning to pivot based on past, current, and future events is one factor we have control over. The security and privacy of a product is no different. There will always be ways to improve.

So a challenge for 2024: What will the software we develop today look like in 34 years? :)
