Episode 2 (Series Two): Coaching and Mentorship for Professional Growth Introduction

Apr 18, 2025

imageWelcome to Episode 2 of Series Two of the Teaching and Learning Strategies in Physical Education and Health (PEH) for Pre-Tertiary Schools in Ghana podcast. In Episode 1, we reimagined PEH teachers as leaders, exploring how leadership can emerge through initiative, collaboration, and impact. In today’s episode, we turn to one of the most powerful tools for sustainable professional development—coaching and mentorship.

In the Ghanaian education context, where formal training opportunities are often limited, peer coaching and mentorship offer essential pathways for growth. This episode explores how experienced and emerging PEH teachers can build relationships that support continuous learning, reflection, and excellence in practice.

This episode targets;

  • Preservice PEH teachers enrolled in teacher education programs.

  • In-service PEH teachers in early childhood, primary, junior high, and senior high schools across Ghana.

  • School administrators, curriculum planners, and policy advocates interested in PEH.

You are all cordially welcome to this episode

    • Peer Mentors: Offer encouragement and model effective classroom management.

    • Departmental Heads: Facilitate communities of practice and data use.

    • Collaborative Partners: Co-teach, observe, and provide feedback.

  4. Building Effective Coaching Relationships

    • Establish trust, mutual respect, and shared goals.

    • Schedule regular meetings or informal check-ins.

    • Use observation, video analysis, or co-teaching sessions.

    • Prioritize growth over evaluation.

  5. Case Study: Peer Coaching in Tamale Metro Schools

    • A cluster of PEH teachers implemented weekly peer observation sessions, supported by WhatsApp-based reflection journals.

    • Outcomes: improved lesson planning, diversified teaching strategies, and a stronger sense of professional identity.

Take-Home Assignment / Reflective Activity

Mentorship Mapping Exercise:

  • Identify three people who have mentored or coached you in your PEH journey. What did you learn from each one?

  • Identify one colleague you could mentor. What strengths could you offer to support their growth?

Coaching Partnership Plan:

  • Design a three-week peer coaching plan with a colleague. Include your shared goals, schedule, method of feedback (e.g., notes, voice messages), and a reflection plan.
