Why We Took Our Kids Out of the UK School System to Worldschool

Mar 26, 2025

A few months ago, we made a decision that would change our family’s life forever. We took our children, aged six and four, out of the UK education system and started travelling the world full-time. It wasn’t a decision we made lightly, but one that has already proven to be the best thing we’ve ever done for our family.

Why We Left the UK School System

The UK school system is designed for one-size-fits-all learning, and that’s a problem. Class sizes are too big, teachers are stretched thin, and creativity is often stifled in favour of box-ticking and test scores. We saw how this impacted our eldest, Lola. Even at six years old, she was already beginning to feel the pressure of fitting into a system that wasn’t built for every child.

Perhaps even more importantly, the school day structure doesn’t leave much room for quality family time. By the time we got home from work and school, everyone was exhausted. We were stressed, short-tempered, and just surviving the daily grind. It felt like we were losing precious time with our kids—time we could never get back.

We wanted more for our family. We wanted freedom. We wanted flexibility. We wanted to teach our kids that learning isn’t limited to a classroom or confined to a set of standardised tests.

The Benefits of Worldschooling

Worldschooling has given us the chance to reshape our children’s education and our family life in ways we never thought possible. Here’s what we’ve discovered so far:

1. Real-Life Learning

Every day is an opportunity to learn something new. Whether it’s exploring a local market, hiking through a rainforest, or visiting a historical site, our kids are learning through real-world experiences. They’re not just reading about different cultures in textbooks—they’re living them.

2. A Personalised Education

We spend our mornings doing maths and phonics, following the UK curriculum to make sure the kids stay on track. But beyond that, we can tailor their learning to their interests. If Lola wants to learn about marine life, we’ll go snorkelling or visit an aquarium. If Zara is curious about how people live in other countries, we can spend an afternoon exploring a local village.

3. Life Skills

Worldschooling teaches lessons you just can’t get in a traditional classroom. Our kids are learning resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills as they navigate new places and situations. They’re also gaining a global perspective, seeing firsthand that the world is full of different people, cultures, and ways of living.

4. Family Connection

The biggest benefit of all? Time together. Travelling full-time has allowed us to reconnect as a family in a way we never could back home. We eat meals together, explore together, and share experiences that will become memories for a lifetime.

What Our Kids Are Gaining Along the Way

Travelling the world is teaching our children that life is about so much more than test scores. They’re learning to appreciate diversity, to adapt to new environments, and to see challenges as opportunities. They’re building confidence and independence while developing a lifelong love of learning.

And the best part? They’re doing it all while spending time with us, exploring the world as a family.

Final Thoughts

Worldschooling isn’t the right path for everyone, but for us, it’s been a transformative experience. It’s given us the freedom to live life on our terms, to prioritise family, and to show our children that the world is their classroom.

If you’re feeling stuck in the daily grind, wondering if there’s another way, we’re here to tell you: there is. It’s not easy to step off the beaten path, but it’s worth it—for the freedom, the connection, and the unforgettable experiences along the way.
