building The Open Music Box, a screen-free audio player for kids
The MusicBox is a screen-free audio player for kids. Insert a card, the story or the music starts. Like a Toniebox or a Yoto, but without an account, with standard NFC cards and with your own MP3s. And it is built to be repaired, not replaced.
It all started with my son. I wanted him to hear the music that matters to me, video game soundtracks like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy, without discovering music through a phone screen. So I hacked together a little box: insert a card, the music plays. He was a year and a half old. The first time, he started dancing, and he didn't let go of the box for two days. He even slept with it.
My sister wanted one for her kids, and the Sunday project became a real one. I build everything solo: the enclosure, the electronics, the app and the services.
What your coffee pays for:
- components and PCB batches for the next prototypes
- 3D printing filament for the enclosure you can download for free
- hours of development to get the MusicBox into families' hands
Follow the build, download the enclosure, join the Discord: https://theopenmusicbox.com/links/
Merci !
