Reiki: Ancestral Power & the Sacred Art of Resistance

Apr 24, 2025

imageThis revelation didn’t come from a book. It didn’t arrive in a workshop or a classroom. It came to me in a quiet whisper from the ancestors.

Last week my beloved Dad was suddenly taken from me. In the wake of his final transition, I find myself sitting in the stillness—grief heavy in my chest, gratitude overflowing in my heart, and legacy thick in the air. As I immerse myself in Reiki, I place my hands over my heart in a moment of sorrow and surrender, and I am flooded with a powerful truth:

This is not just healing. This is resistance. This is reclamation. This is war paint.

Reiki is not just a wellness trend. For the Afro-diaspora, it is a revolutionary act of spiritual reclamation. In a world that has exploited our labor, erased our rituals, and pathologized our pain, Reiki is one way we say: We remember. We reclaim. We heal—on our terms.

The Afro-diaspora didn’t survive the transatlantic slave trade, Jim Crow, mass incarceration, forced sterilization, and medical apartheid just to play small in the wellness space. Our healing is not optional—it’s inevitable. And if that makes people uncomfortable? Good. Let them squirm.

When we talk about intergenerational trauma, we often speak in hushed tones, careful not to rattle the bones of what we’ve been taught to bury. But this silence has cost us centuries of grief trapped in our bodies, in our bloodlines, in our breath. That ends now.

Many Black practitioners today are blending Usui Reiki with:

  • Ancestral veneration (pouring libations before attunements)

  • Chakra work infused with Black spiritual symbols

  • Incense, oils, and drums from African diasporic traditions

  • Moon and sun rituals rooted in agricultural rhythms of our ancestors

This fusion is not a dilution of Reiki—it’s a re-rooting of Reiki into African cosmology. Reiki is an ancestral balm. Not because it’s trendy, not because it’s exoticized, but because it’s effective. When Black hands channel that energy with intention, what we’re really doing is speaking to the bones—ours and our ancestors’.

We are undoing the trauma of whippings and womb-violations. We are whispering healing into the cracked backs of grandmothers who labored in kitchens and cotton fields. We are telling the inner child who never felt safe, “You are held now.” We are reaching across timelines to say to our people, You did not survive in vain.

Reiki, in our hands, becomes a sacred act of defiance.

It is the antithesis of “get over it.” It is our refusal to forget. It is our commitment to restore what was stolen—our peace, our power, our presence. And when we pass this practice down—mother to daughter, elder to youth, practitioner to community—we are not just teaching a modality. We are teaching remembrance.

The Afro-diasporic legacy is not one-dimensional. We are descendants of conjure women, herbalists, root workers, griots, and midwives. Reiki fits into this lineage seamlessly. It is a bridge, not a departure. When we integrate Reiki into our communities, we rethread ourselves into the great web of African spiritual sovereignty.

And we do this not for aesthetics, not for approval from mainstream wellness—which has long profited off our practices without ever acknowledging our pain—but because we deserve to feel whole again.

If you’ve ever questioned whether Reiki is “ours,” let me be clear: Anything that facilitates the restoration of your spirit, the honoring of your lineage, and the liberation of your nervous system from colonial violence—is absolutely yours to claim.

Reiki is not a luxury. It is not a spa add-on. It is our sacred response to intergenerational devastation. It is medicine. It is memory. It is movement.

To my fellow Black Reiki practitioners, teachers, and seekers: stand tall in this work. Do not shrink. Do not whisper. Do not dilute. Our lineage does not end with trauma—it continues with transmutation. We are not here to assimilate into spiritual spaces that were never built for us. We are here to build new temples, on the bones of the old, with our ancestors on the altar and power in our palms. Let Reiki be part of how you shift the energy for your descendants. Let it be part of how you say, I am the healing my ancestors prayed for.

This is not just energy work.
This is ancestral technology.
This is sacred rebellion.
This is #FAFO healing at its finest.

Let them find out. We are not broken. We are breaking cycles.

We are not lost. We are returning home—one hand over heart, one breath at a time.
