I spent my weekend deep in the "genealogy lab," and let me tell you—the breakthroughs I had were a massive reminder of why I do this. I’m officially adding these strategies as "Pro-Tips" in my upcoming book, Minding My (Ancestral) Business, because the standard search isn’t always enough.
We all know that 10-year gap frustration. A lot can happen in a decade—families move, records are lost, or names are misspelled beyond recognition. When the documents disappear, I don’t stop; I pivot to the science.
How I broke through the brick walls this weekend:
Cluster Matching: I stopped looking for one person and started looking at the "FAN" club (Friends, Associates, and Neighbors).
The DNA Trail: I used shared DNA segments to see where different branches intersected, even when there was no birth certificate to prove it.
Surnames & Hypotheses: By tracking specific surnames across geographical clusters, I used reasoning and triangulation to build a bridge over those record gaps.
Genealogy is part history, part forensic science, and 100% persistence. If the records aren't there, you have to use the tools that are. I can’t wait to show you how to apply these frameworks to your own tree!
