Mochi Disaster

Mochi Disaster

Mar 26, 2025

If you Nocturnal Nectarines scroll down on my Instagram or even here, you'll find something. I used to be a cooking channel of sorts. ⚆_⚆ What? Yeah, I know it's a shock. I've changed my brand many times before getting here. There was one recipe in particular that I did repeatedly. And that was my Improvised Mochi recipe.

If you know you know. Sadly, my cooking website is no longer up so you can't find the full story. The point was I wanted Mochi but didn't have the ingredients. I could never find that glutenous rice flour at my store. We have like one big store in our area, and I wasn't going all the way downtown for that. So, I improvised and essentially made a doughy custard ball. Then, I'd let it sit in the freezer for a couple minutes and eat it. And to be honest, it was pretty great. Especially the mango version I made.

Getting back on track. My friend came over and she had a plan. She said she bought all the ingredients to make actual mochi and wanted me to try it. I trust my friend's cooking skills. After all, she's worked at food establishments before. I take a seat and watch her take no measurements, throw stuff in a pot and pray for the best. But I still have faith in her. Sometimes you have to trust the process. Right? She comes out of the kitchen, giggling. Never a good sign.

She shows me a pan full of sticky white frosting and shrugs her shoulders. The lady then tries to make me taste it, which I am incredibly weary of. She eats some herself to assure me it's okay. (Spoiler alert, it was not okay) I depart some of my improvised mochi wisdom upon her. I told her what I did for my recipe, and she replicated it. And we had a squishy, stretchy mochi. She takes a bite and asks if she should put it in the oven.

I said why? She said because it's not fully cooked. Now, I know that having raw flour is bad for you. A lot of people think it's the eggs that sicken you in cakes and other desserts, but raw flour is the main culprit. Especially wheat flour. I knew that almond flour and coconut flour were fine to eat raw and I assumed the same for rice flour. A terrible terrible assumption. I ate maybe 2 mochis and went on with my day. After a while my stomach started growling.

Yes, it's Ramadan and I'm fasting, but I wasn't that hungry. Then, it started hurting. So, I did what I always do when I'm in pain. I went to sleep. After a lot of tossing and turning I felt incredibly lightheaded and was on the verge of passing out. But I held it together, barely. For the next few hours, I was violently sick and imagine my surprise when I look up rice flour. The first thing I see are the words Never eat rice flour raw. It was too late for me. Meanwhile my friend is chilling in the living room doing Lord knows what. I'm out here throwing up and she's watching YouTube videos. Where is the justice?

On a serious note, I am happy she didn't sick like I did. That was just one of those moments where you live and learn. I'm going to stick to my improvised Mochi and leave the real version to the professional. In case you did not know my Hardworking Hazelnuts, you do now. Do NOT eat raw rice flour. Make sure it is thoroughly cooked, or you will get sick.

If you enjoy my content leave a like and be sure to tune in tomorrow. I have a big announcement to make and an offer you cannot refuse. ( •̀ ω •́ )✧
