A recent AMA question asked....
What is your take on the difference between attachments and connections?
While these two words feel so very close, I do think there are some pretty distinct differences. Attachment feels external, while connection feel internal. Let me see if I can draw this out a bit...
Attachment
When I think of the word attachment, I think of something that sticks to something else. For example, when I trim my beard, I am using a variety of attachments to the trimmer to get the depth and shape I am looking for.
In personal relationships, we can feel an attachment to someone else. There is something about that person that draws us to them, something that makes us want to be near and around them. There can be an emotional attachment that brings out heart next to theirs, or a physical attachment where we just have to be next to them.
Connection
When I think of the word connection, I think of something that fits within something else. For example, when I plug something into the wall... the plug is going into the wall, making a connection that allows the energy to flow.
A connection is more internal and deeper. It is something that not only draws you close, but makes you want to be a part of. In personal relationships, it's that thing that makes us want to be vulnerable with each other. Its the meeting of the minds, of the heart and the soul that makes everything just click together.
Which Is Better?
I think it really depends on the situation, honestly. I mean, we all have a deep desire for a great connection, but attachment has it's place as well. I have friends that I find myself attached to in many ways, but we never seem to find a deeper connection.... but that doesn't mean those friends are of no value! But there are people I connect with on a deeper level, and those are special as well.
There's nothing wrong with attachment, by any means. For those I am connected with, I am also quite attached to. But I do think you can be attached without being connected... not so sure how to be connected and not somehow attached.
I don't know that either is better though. It is definitely a more case by case basis, in many ways.
Not sure if that helped answer the question, but I thought I would at least share my thoughts.
