Janus, I guess I forgot to add my question!
I have decided to go for a much higher-end driver for my next Voigt Pipe project. I have used a 5" Tang Band full-range with great results (W5-2143) in a 6' pipe in a 16'x36' great room, driven by Marantz 7 preamp and Marantz 8B tube amp (35 watts), both purchased around 1965 by my uncle.
I want to achieve even more bass and dynamics, yet maintain or even improve on the beautiful midrange quality. I was thinking of a 6.5" or even an 8" full-range driver for my next build. I'm looking for a possible "forever speaker".
Question 1: which size would give me the best trade-off in terms of overall performance and cohesion? I listen to jazz, choral, classical, acoustic and am a big fan of the great vocalists.
It seems that Cube Audio has discontinued the Fc8 ($1,999/pr) and has replaced it with the F8 Magus: 92dB ($2,800/pr) with a much stronger magnet, and the F8 Neo: 90dB ($4,700/pr) with neodymium magnets.
Question 2: Is it worth the $1,000-$3,000 jump in price? Or should I try to find a used Fc8?
Sincerely,
Dr. Derek Conte
