The Desk

On top of a hill in Alpine Texas sits a desk and a chair with a magnificent view. As you can imagine, there's a story here.

The story goes that back sometime in the sixties or seventies and fella by the name of Kitchen used to run the trails of Hancock Hill behind Sul Ross College. At some point in his college career he was placed in charge of furniture on campus and shortly thereafter enlisted a few friends to haul the desk to the peak. Mr. Kitchen would run the trails and record his times in a notebook within the desk. As with any good secret, the word eventually got out and people started making the short one and a half mile hike to the desk and signing the book or sharing their thoughts.

As the desk would rust out or otherwise succumb to the elements it gets replaced and the notebooks moved into the new vessel. There are currently thirteen notebooks in the desk. It is adorned with the signatures of many passers by and stickers of those with Tube channels or web pages. What was a legitimate getaway for an athletic college student has become a local landmark that is both beautiful in it's location and an absurdity at the same time.

Have a great day!
