Among the Experts

Feb 18, 2023

This will be a short blast of a post concerning all of the "Experts" who love to provide you with Top Tricks and Hacks or Top Ten things that you have to do to live the RV live.

First off is a legit question: What makes these people experts? So, you've lived in your RV for one, three, five years and now you're able define what someone absolutely has to do to take on this lifestyle? I call BS. I recently posted a question in a FB RV group asking if anyone actually reads these things and the answer was a resounding No with one person saying they have been living in their RV for thirty years and he's still learning every day.

It turns out that the majority of the posts that I see on social media are really just click bait trying to up their traffic numbers. However, I bought the bait and read the list which included such golden bits of advice like "Downsize" and "Find a Job on the Internet". If there is anyone out there that doesn't know that when considering living in an RV full time, then don't try to live in an RV full time for obvious reasons.

Having gotten all that out of the way, I present to you the only Top Things list I will ever put out. We'll call it "Top Things to do If You Want to Live Full Time in your RV and You Can Sell Your House for a Profit". This doesn't make me an expert but it's what we did and it worked.

  • Take out some form of loan (for us it was a home equity loan) and buy the RV of your choice and the vehicle to pull it, if needed.

  • Buy used. RV's these days are quickly and cheaply constructed and are wrought with problems that the dealer will tell you to take up with the manufacturer. Older RV's seem to be tougher and more reliable.

  • Pull together the bare minimum of material possessions needed to survive, then sell or donate everything. You'll be surprised how much you'll make. In the event that you sell something you end up needing, buy it later.

  • Put anything you can't carry with you but you are unwilling to part with in storage with a relative. It shouldn't be much.

  • Sell the house and pay everything off.

  • Leave with a solid work ethic and a plan for success.

It's a good idea to do some real research and connect with websites like workampernews.com for job resources but we took the first year and worked jobs at local businesses. We have to dip into our savings from time to time but our heads are above water. Currently, we are working at an RV park two days a week, although we don't get paid for it, we live here for free with plenty of spare time to go to town and work part time jobs.

Again, I'm no expert and you damn sure won't see me schilling myself as one. If you have a question, ask and if I can't answer it I'll say so. And if you are into "Top Ten Things That..." lists, there are more than a few annoying people and couples on the Tube for your watching pleasure.

Thanks for letting me rant just a bit. Have a great day!
