A dictionary that costs less than a coffee (and spells C0FFEE)

Oct 01, 2026

Something a little different from the usual gongs and mindful poetry. We have written a dictionary.

Hexadecimal, the base-sixteen counting system computers love, borrows six letters (A to F) to count past nine. Programmers have spent decades noticing that those letters spell things: C0FFEE, FACADE, DECAF, B00B5. We stopped noticing and started collecting.

My Favourite Hexadecimal Numbers is the result: 1,775 words that are secretly numbers (not including the ones we didn't think of), each with its value in hex, decimal and binary, a star rating, and an original definition written with a straight face. The English words are left out on purpose, so working out that C0CC1D105E5 is a real word is half the fun.

It is also The Official Dictionary of HEXABBLE, a word-tile game in base sixteen that we invented. First to 0x10 wins.

Inside:

  • The Dictionary: 1,775 hex words, rated from ★ to ★★★★★

  • The Hall of Fame: the hex hidden inside real computers, from DEADBEEF to CAFEBABE

  • Puzzles: a 100-question quiz, a hex word search and a colour-matching challenge

  • HEXABBLE: full rules and 112 printable tiles

It's a 258-page PDF for £1.50, which is less than a coffee. Every copy sold helps keep the gong bonging and Uni-Verse growing, three words at a time.

We really are that childish.
