The Answer : Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” entering the Hot 100 at the start of the year and reaching No. 1 on February 23, 1980.
It was written by Freddie Mercury, and although composed in late 1979, it was first released in the U.S. in 1980, making it the first newly‑written rock song to appear on the chart.
Freddie’s bathtub moment; wrote the entire song in about 10 minutes while relaxing in a bubble bath at the Munich Hilton. He literally jumped out, dripping, to grab a guitar and get the idea down.
Elvis tribute: Freddie wrote it as a playful homage to Elvis Presley and early rockabilly. You can hear the Sun Records DNA as plain as day along with the slap-back echo, the swagger, the tight rhythmic strut.
Brian May’s guitar choice: Instead of his iconic Red Special, Brian used a Fender Telecaster to get that classic rockabilly twang. It’s one of the rare Queen tracks where he doesn’t use his signature guitar.
