AA lie : "It is about personal experience"

AA members often say, “AA never claimed to be the only way.” as a defense of their cult. Yet, the moment someone describes a different recovery path, the conversation shifts. Suddenly the person is told they “have a resentment,” or they’re “not really sober,” or the classic: “you just didn’t want to do the work.”

Wait a minute, the very people that say, "AA never said it was the only way" are now attacking everyone that does not do it the AA way, as if suggesting that AA is actually the only valid path. It directly contradicts the claim that AA sees itself as one option among many. If AA truly believed recovery had multiple valid pathways, it wouldn’t reflexively pathologize anyone who succeeded outside of its framework. Nor would it leap to a defensive posture of attacking everyone that does not go along with the narrative.

The same contradiction shows up in the “it’s just my experience” defense.

AA members will insist they’re only speaking from personal experience, but then immediately attempt to invalidate everyone else’s. If someone says AA harmed them, they’re told they’re angry. If someone says AA didn’t work, they’re told they didn’t try. If someone says they recovered through SMART Recovery or The Sinclair Method, they’re told it’s not “real sobriety.” SO personal experience is valid when defending AA, it is invalid the minute it does not line up with the AA narrative.

If AA wants to present itself as something that works, then appealing to personal experience is not sufficient. Personal stories are not evidence. Evidence comes from measurable outcomes, retention data, controlled studies, and transparent reporting. AA does not provide that. If AA wants to claim effectiveness, it has to engage with actual recovery data not slogans, not anecdotes, and not accusations of resentment.

However, I find it very telling that AA defenders lie, manipulate conversations and make accusations at the slightest criticism. It proves that they can not defend the program on its own merit, because it has no merit to begin with.
