In this post you will learn:

- How long does it take to become an artist?

- Do you need to finish a design profession university to work as an artist?

- Which tool is better for a beginner: paper or tablet?

Hello, it's Punny here.

Are you interested in art and thinking of becoming an artist because you love to draw? Drawing is like meditation, it calms, relaxes, and sometimes produces great illustrations (but sometimes you want to throw them in the trash and forget). What to do when AI is everywhere now, and any picture can be generated, when mom and dad say that the artist's profession will never bring wealth and stability.

In childhood, my grandmother used to say: "An artist is a bad profession, you will starve to death, talent is needed." Of course, I didn't listen to her and continued to draw with all my might, but I faced many problems.

Art subjects surround us everywhere; it's not just paintings in a gallery, but also product packaging design, TV advertising, work of costume designers and stylists in movies, makeup artists, storyboard artists, animators, sculptors, game artists. Any object you hold in your hands was originally a drawing, plus book illustrations, comics, website design.

So, look at how much awaits you and it seems like a lot of room as well as competition. There are many talented artists online with their amazing works.

Now how much time will it take when you take a pencil or a tablet stylus to feel like a master?

On average, it takes 5-10 years of practice. It all depends on how your brain develops, your thinking and hands, observation skills. Look at and copy the works of other people, draw any objects you see, spend at least an hour a day drawing. Analyze objects, space, and color.

A real master should be able to draw with a pencil, paint, and on a tablet, as well as know 3D and sculpting. Start with a regular pencil and paper. Save your money; don't buy expensive devices right away. No matter how expensive the gadget is, if your hand is not ready, it will not be useful.

To get a job, it is not necessary to have a degree in art, but such experience will still raise you as a professional in the eyes of other people, because art is over 5000 years old. Perhaps studying will seem boring, you need to know the history and some bore people from the past, you need to draw reproductions of paintings and do what you don't like. University is a good foundation to understand if you want to spend your life drawing.

If you can't get into school, don't give up. I myself didn't graduate from an art college, but I found a job. Self-taught people have great potential because they passionately take up the matter.

Which tool is better?

Paper and digital drawing have different specifics. The thing is, in traditional art, you don't have as many options for maneuvering, you must be accurate and make fewer mistakes, whereas in digital art, there is a magical ctrl+z that will erase all previous steps, there is a transformation function, cropping, which gives ease in either editing.

The hand gets used to working on paper and a tablet differently, and often you need to retrain and get used to it again. So, definitely choose your path as a traditional or digital artist.
