This is one of my favorite hikes in Tahoe and honestly one of the most beautiful and short trails I have ever been on. It is super easy, has the most amazing views, and leads you straight to a stunning waterfall that will take your breath away 💕 Whether you visit in the winter when the whole trail transforms into a magical snowy wonderland or in the summer when the waterfall is rushing and the sun is hitting just right this trail delivers every single time 🌨️☀️

The Trail 🥾

Cascade Falls is a relatively short and easy hike that is perfect for all experience levels. The trail winds through beautiful pine forest and opens up to sweeping views of Lake Tahoe along the way before leading you to the falls. In the winter the snow covered trees and frozen landscape make the whole experience feel like you have stepped inside a snow globe 🌨️🌲 In the summer the waterfall cascades over layered granite rocks and creates the most perfect natural hangout spot you have ever seen 🌊

The Waterfall 🌊

This is the reward and it is absolutely worth every step. The falls rush over beautiful tiered granite rocks and in the summer you can sit right on the rocks and soak it all in bathing suit highly recommended 😌🥰 It is the perfect spot to have a picnic, cool off, and just be present in one of the most gorgeous places on earth.

The Castle 🏰

When you hike to Cascade Falls , one of the most striking sights isn’t just the waterfall itself, it’s the elegant stone castle perched across the water on Fannette Island. The structure, known as the Vikingsholm Tea House, was built in 1929 as part of the grand Vikingsholm estate, a Scandinavian-style mansion tucked along the shore of Emerald Bay. From the trail, the castle-like building rises from the rocky island, framed by deep blue water and towering granite cliffs, giving the whole scene a fairytale feel.

Winter vs Summer 🌨️☀️

Both seasons are magical here and I mean that. In the winter the trail is covered in snow, the pine trees are frosted, and the whole experience feels peaceful and otherworldly 🌨️🌲 The pine cones alone out here are massive and stunning nature really said go big or go home 😄 In the summer the waterfall is at its most powerful from the snowmelt and the rocks by the falls are the perfect picnic and hangout spot. Both versions of this trail are worth experiencing so if you can go twice go twice!

What To Pack 🎒

In the summer bring a bathing suit and water sandals for the rocks by the falls. A picnic spread and blanket because this spot was made for lingering 🧺 Plenty of water and snacks. Sunscreen and a hat. In the winter bring layers, waterproof boots, and microspikes or traction devices for the snow and ice on the trail. And always bring your camera because this trail will give you some of the most stunning photos of your life 📸🌲

Cascade Falls is one of those trails that reminds you why we protect these spaces. It is easy enough for everyone but stunning enough to leave even the most experienced hiker in awe.
