🏊♂️🏃♂️🧠 EXERCISE & MEMORY IN AGING 🧠🚴♀️🧘♀️
Cognitive Decline and Memory Impairment are major Public Health problems associated with human aging.
Maintaining an agile mind and a good memory are the primary concerns of people as they age.
✅ A recent review indicates that Physical Training, particularly Moderate and Consistent Aerobic Exercise, is an affordable and effective non-pharmacological method for mitigating these problems.
- Regular Physical Activity has been shown to slow the progression of Cognitive Decline in older adults. The positive effects of Exercise on the Brain are attributed to a combination of Physical and Molecular Mechanisms.
- At the Physical level, exercise improves cerebral blood circulation, enhancing Synaptic Plasticity (the improvement of neuronal connections) and stimulating Neurogenesis for creating new brain cells.
- At the Molecular level, these processes are regulated by a complex network of molecular signaling, including Neurotransmitters, Neurotrophic Factors, and Exerkines, with a specific emphasis on the IRISIN/BDNF signaling pathway as a key link between Muscle contraction and Brain function during Exercise.
- Irisin promotes the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein crucial for the survival, growth, and maintenance of brain cells. This Irisin/BDNF pathway is considered a Central Link between Physical Activity and improved Brain Function.
✅ Overall, although there are some inconsistencies in the literature, Regular and Chronic Exercise are consistently associated with Better Memory Performance than intense exercise sessions.
- On the other hand, a deeper understanding of these molecular signals could allow the development of new pharmaceutical treatments for people who are physically unable to exercise, such as those with mobility limitations.
