Before You Try to Grow, Figure Out What Is Actually Holding You Back

Sep 30, 2026

Growth sounds like a straightforward objective.

More customers. More revenue. More markets. More people. More transactions.

But the more businesses I look at, the more I've realised that growth itself isn't really the difficult question.

The difficult question is understanding what the business actually needs.

A company can have plenty of demand and still struggle because the operation can't handle it. It can have good revenue and poor cash flow. It can have more customers and lower margins. It can expand into new markets without having the people, systems or capital to support that expansion properly.

So I've become much more interested in the questions underneath growth.

What are we actually trying to achieve?

What's currently working?

What's not working?

Where is the bottleneck?

What is limiting the business from moving to the next stage?

And what has to change before additional growth actually creates value?

Those questions sound obvious, but they're easy to skip because "grow" feels like a much more exciting objective than "understand the constraint."

I've seen businesses try to solve operational problems with sales, cash-flow problems with revenue, management problems with hiring and strategy problems with more activity.

Sometimes the business doesn't need more.

It needs to work better.

That's something I've been thinking about more as I've built Stratos and started working with other businesses as well.

Growth can be a very good thing.

But growth also magnifies whatever is already there.

A strong system gets bigger.

A weak system gets bigger too.

That's why I think the quality of the questions you ask before growing can matter just as much as the growth strategy itself.
