TRICKED | 15 Signs That Someone Is Insincere

Jul 22, 2023

I was once approached by a man at a gas station who was desperate for someone to fill up his gas can. I ended up helping him out but only after I felt comfortable that he was telling the truth (find out what gave it away here).

Detecting insincerity in people can be challenging, but there are certain signs and behaviors that might indicate that a person is not being genuine. Here are some common signs of insincere individuals:

1. Excessive flattery: Insincere people may use excessive compliments and flattery to manipulate or gain favor from others.

2. Inconsistent body language: Watch for inconsistencies between what they say and their nonverbal cues, such as avoiding eye contact or fidgeting.

3. Over-the-top reactions: They might display exaggerated emotions or reactions that seem unnatural or disproportionate to the situation.

4. Frequent name-dropping: Insincere individuals may often drop names of important or influential people they claim to know to boost their status.

5. Unwillingness to listen: They may not genuinely listen to others' opinions or concerns, as they are more focused on their own agenda.

6. Making promises they can't keep: Insincere people might make grand promises without any intention of following through on them.

7. Flakiness and unreliability: They may frequently cancel plans or fail to meet commitments, showing a lack of genuine interest or concern.

8. Shifting personalities: You might notice changes in their demeanor or personality when interacting with different people or groups, adapting to what they think others want to see.

9. Constant need for validation: Insincere individuals may seek constant validation and approval from others to feel better about themselves.

10. Lack of empathy: They may have difficulty understanding or showing genuine empathy towards others' feelings or experiences.

11. Excessive self-promotion: They often boast about their achievements or exaggerate their accomplishments to create a specific image.

12. Manipulative Insincere people may manipulate situations and people to serve their interests without genuine regard for others.

13. Gossiping and backstabbing: They might engage in spreading rumors or talking negatively about others behind their backs.

14. Unwillingness to take responsibility: Insincere individuals may avoid taking responsibility for their actions or mistakes, shifting blame onto others.

15. Inconsistent stories: Their stories or explanations might change over time, and they may struggle to keep their facts straight.

While people can display one or two of these behaviors occasionally, it's important to pay attention if they display several. If you observe multiple signs of insincerity in someone's behavior, it would be worth approaching the relationship with caution, setting appropriate boundaries, or exiting the relationship altogether.
