The origin story of bike-shedding has roots in the story of a team of people who were tasked with building a power plant. Most (if not all) of the persons involved also rode their bikes to work in which case they needed some place to store their bikes during work hours: a bike shed. Soon, company meetings about the power plant became peppered with conversations about the bike shed. What kind? What size? What materials? What color? What cost?

As stories go, bike-shedding became a term used to describe a situation where a group or organization spends a disproportionate amount of time and energy discussing trivial or unimportant details while neglecting more critical and complex issues. However, it's sexier term, The Law of Triviality, identifies this group behavior as instinctive.

Because bike-shedding is a law, here are ways to guard against it whenever a group gets together for the purpose of achieving some sort of supreme good:

1. Clear Objectives and Priorities: Establish clear and well-defined objectives for the group or organization. Set priorities and identify the most critical issues that need attention and focus. Having a clear sense of purpose helps the group stay on track and avoid getting bogged down in trivial matters.

2. Effective Leadership: Strong and effective leadership is crucial in guiding discussions and decision-making processes. Leaders should be proactive in steering the group towards important topics and redirecting discussions away from trivial issues that can derail progress.

3. Agenda Setting: Prioritize the most critical topics on the meeting agenda and allocate sufficient time for discussing these matters. Avoid spending excessive time on less important issues, especially if they do not directly contribute to the group's objectives.

4. Expert Input: Involve subject matter experts who can provide insights and expertise on complex or technical matters. Their input can help the group focus on important issues and avoid superficial discussions on trivial topics.

5. Time Management: Implement time management techniques to ensure that discussions stay on track and do not get sidetracked by unimportant matters. Set time limits for discussions and adhere to them to prevent excessive focus on trivial issues.

6. Decision-Making Processes: Use efficient decision-making processes that prioritize critical matters. Employ methods such as majority voting, consensus-building, or delegation of authority to appropriate individuals or subgroups to avoid unnecessary delays caused by prolonged discussions on minor issues.

7. Encourage Open Communication: Foster an environment where team members feel comfortable voicing their opinions and concerns. Encourage constructive criticism and open discussion on important topics while discouraging excessive focus on trivial matters.

8. Educate on the Law of Triviality: Make the group members aware of the concept of the Law of Triviality and its potential impact on decision-making. By understanding this phenomenon, individuals can be more conscious of their own behavior and actively work to avoid falling into the trap of bike-shedding.

9. Review Progress Regularly: Periodically assess the group's progress towards its objectives. Evaluate whether the discussions and decisions have remained focused on critical issues or if there has been a tendency to bike-shed. Use these evaluations to make adjustments and improvements in the group's functioning.

By implementing these strategies, a group can guard against the law of triviality and ensure that its discussions and decisions remain focused on the most important and impactful issues.
