Sharing this post informs others of the ethical uses for Tor / I2P networks


ℹ️ One study reported 93% of usage involves legal / ethical activities (ie: security / privacy protection), with only 6.7% illicit.

💡 TIP: These networks offer major security enhancement options (ie: end-to-end encryption for .onion / .i2p) over standard internet infrastructure. No surprise most use is above board. Learn more below.

ℹ️ DETAILS ON I2P DDoS

Developers report the attacker in question runs many nodes. Malicious nodes becoming removed over time.


I commend I2P project for their transparency on this issue. You can learn more by heading to http://zzz.i2p (use i2p-desktop or other i2prouter solution to visit).

Very much a game of cat & mouse until mitigations are introduced in coming I2P updates.

The more malicious nodes an attacker has under their control (in contrast to total number of users / legitimate nodes), the greater threat to overall network (whether disruption or deanonymization is goal).

At the time of this reporting, there is no evidence this attacker is targeting hidden service / user for deanonymization. It could be that the attacker is purely attacking reliability in response to network / protocols being as effective as they are (for anonymity).

When failing at deanonymization, a discouraged attacker may choose denial of service as next likely pursuit. Though it is "possible" for DoS to be part of a greater deanonymization strategy (goes for all networks, requires exceptional access), there is no evidence of such as this time.

Another consideration: dual simultaneous attacks may be intended to create FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). By leaving users in the dark as to the motivations behind the attacks, rumors may spread, causing some to fear the worst.


ℹ️ STUDY: Tor / I2P For Good (most usage)

Don't buy into the false propaganda intended to steer you towards less safe applications. We need to make these networks stronger, not weaker. We also need to take the route of sharing security benefits. Hidden services are about so much more than anonymity, privacy. By offering end-to-end encryption for "hidden service" / eepsites, we can take advantage of the advanced security they provide.

This is how we normalize usage against the flow of harmful propaganda. Most users are using these networks for ethical / legal purposes. I'm confident in saying this (as it is true for myself), and studies demonstrate as much.

This makes our best approach (as a community) to grow the networks (both Tor / I2P), and user base. I2P users act as internal nodes, helping pass traffic inside i2p tunnels (p2p).

The more users, the more nodes, the stronger the network.

And, the more expensive it becomes to attack. Spread the word and grow the network by sharing this post / video.

We can achieve these goals (for both Tor / I2P) by spreading the good word about the networks. Teaching users how to get started (easy: share public tutorials on this blog), and scripts like the automated snowflake installer, I2P-desktop (links above).


Data Collection Feeds Discrimination

Personal internet data can (and will) be used to discriminate. Whether it concerns health insurance rates, employment opportunities, or even banking / loan applications - data is a tool leveraged in such a way that justifies discrimination.

Onion / mixnets are premier solutions to personal data being taken out of context (ever search health / symptoms? You may be discriminated against. Even if you weren't browsing for yourself).

Not all VPN's are honest. There is a bigger picture at hand. The data available to brokers tomorrow will dwarf that of today. We have no idea how much personal data may become available in the future (some of which may currently appear "private").


Back To Attacks

On I2P, these attackers have changed tactics, causing continued disruption for some users.

According to I2P developers, this has affected i2pd users moreso than Java I2P+ / i2prouter users.
