What Can I Do at Home to Get Better at Pole?

Jun 09, 2025

Ahhh, the question I get all the time —

“What can I do at home (or at the gym) to get better at pole?”

Let me give it to you straight:

Nothing — and I mean nothing — will make you better at pole like doing actual pole.

BUT…

That doesn’t mean you’re helpless when you’re not at the studio. That’s literally why I created Pole FIT by Amy — to help support you in the gaps, between classes, and on the days when you’re not spinning around a pole like the majestic being you are.

So let’s start with this:

Which area is giving you the most trouble right now?

– Is it strength (can’t hold yourself up, gassing out mid-climb)?

– Is it flexibility (struggling to move well or hit clean lines)?

– Or is it timing and coordination (aka spaghetti legs in combos)?

Once you’ve clocked that — head over to my video library and start where you’re at.

There’s a bunch of beginner-friendly tutorials that don’t require a pole or any fancy equipment.

Like:

💪 Tricep Dips — a must-have if you want stronger arms (and yes, there’s a proper way to do them)

☃️ Ab 4 Inversion — Exactly as it say a carefully crafted set of core exercises to help you become a fully fledged pole dancer and get upside down.

🔥 Plank Holds — honestly, just holding a plank for 30 seconds a day will do more for your pole strength than a random machine at the gym

Want something even simpler?

Just repeat the warm-up your instructor gives you at class. Consistency beats complexity, every time.

And if you’re still craving more pole-specific magic?

🌀 Try a different class at your studio — spin pole, dance choreo, floorwork, heels, whatever’s out of your usual box.

🎪 Or dabble in another aerial apparatus like hoop or silks. Different tools can help build transferable skills for pole, especially with grip, core, and flow. You don’t have to get good them or even love it as much as pole (or maybe it’s visa versa!) Just use it as a strength training tool.

Final reminder:
Pole is a journey. It’s not linear, it’s not fast, and it’s definitely not about who gets the trick first.

The best thing you can do is show up — to class, to your mat, to yourself.

And I’m here to help with the bits in between 💜
