My work begins with the palabra escrita—the written word—in both English and Spanish, and from there, it grows into other mediums. It starts with words because the otherness of my heavily accented childhood language pushed me to find solace in books. These books helped me dream and gave shape to my adult reality.
Through my art, I explore how words and images captured on paper or canvas, how threads woven into fabric, or how sounds given the freedom to float in the wind, strengthen the lazos that connect us. They breathe life into vacuums and allow us to see the beauty in the mundane, the minuscule details of our everyday lives.
These details—often overlooked—blend my Mexican, Tejanx, and Xicanx heritage with American sensibilities, creating a unique rasquache aesthetic. It is an aesthetic that embraces resourcefulness, vibrancy, and the beauty found in imperfection, reflecting both my journey and the community I am proud to be part of.
