** please note you need original quake 1 (one) game data or mission packs, this app only ships the shareware demo level for testing **
MacQuake is a modern native port of the classic 1996 shooter Quake, built from the ground up for Apple Silicon Macs. No SDL, no
emulation layers, no x86 assembly hacks. Just clean C and Objective C, a software renderer with a Metal framebuffer blitter, and
a polished Cocoa launcher that handles everything from game data setup to one click play.
I built this because I wanted Quake to feel like a real macOS app. Transparent title bars, a dark themed launcher with cover art
, automatic shareware data installation, relative mouse lock, resizable windows, and full audio support. It even handles the inf
amous 64 bit QuakeC string pointer truncation bug that crashes most naive ports when you try to start a new game.
This is a passion project. Every line of renderer code, every UI tweak, every crash fix came from late nights debugging pointer
arithmetic and wrestling with AppKit. If you enjoyed playing through Quake on your Mac, or you appreciate the work that goes int
o preserving classic games on modern hardware, a coffee goes a long way toward keeping projects like this alive.
Your support helps cover development time, testing on different macOS versions, and future improvements like mod support, advanc
ed video settings, and maybe even networked multiplayer. Thank you for keeping classic gaming alive on the Mac.
