I just updated the about us section in our profile. Lots of things going on around here. Check it out so I’m not repeating myself (but for convenience I’ll leave it below). I hope you’re all doing well. We are struggling with illness a bit but alive and resilient. So much has happened…hit & run, Hurricane Beryl, tree through the roof, shed ruined, COVID, loss of my job, phone and two TVs due to no AC for 12 days…but home insurance don’t cover the last three…then one single gust of wind the following week blew the table umbrella over shattering the glass table, and now we struggle with sick kitties (maybe bacterial infections, some worms and fleas). I’m exhausted emotionally but we are getting better.
It’s been so long y’all don’t know Greyson or Meridian aka MeriMack….the little tuxedo came up sick during the Hurricane…that is C.C. or Cici aka Cookies and Cream.
Update here: 😻We now care for 50+ cats. We (mostly me) are individuals caring for this very bonded community. We are stretched thin currently living on one income as they have been sick after Hurricane Beryl and the additional kittens needing constant attention. I love them, but they are a lot of work. I’m currently seeking volunteers to help keep up with feeding and cleaning so that I can return to work. We can’t achieve big plans if we are always treading water, if you know what I mean. I’m always so busy but not moving forward. Any and all help is appreciated.
We are a sanctuary, not a shelter. They have furrever homes with us as long as they are happy. I do everything I can and rely on you for help. We always need help with food, litter, & fleatx. Always!
We TNR cats that show up here & at our second location my family acquired after our lifelong neighbor moved. She used to feed ferals/strays but never had them fixed. We have been working hard to trap them all but many females elude us, this we have several litters of kittens. We catch them young with hopes that we can catch the mothers too and get them all fixed. We are a sanctuary so the majority of cats will not be rehomed. We hope to find homes for the kittens after they are spayed/neutered to ensure they do not multiply. The cats there are mostly protected by the ability to hide under mobile homes, in enclosed car ports and tractor car ports both inside and outside fences. We have a long double level workbench that currently serves as a place to feed them and a place to escape stray neighborhood dogs. They also get up and under abandoned cars at my family’s automotive shop. We do check before starting any vehicles. I have hopes to build up for their protection. For now, we do what we can.
If you’re looking for help with TNR or rehoming, I can only offer advice. While I want to help all the kitties in the world, I cannot. I am already stretched too thin at the moment & struggle releasing or rehoming cats once they bond with me. I never want them to feel abandoned as the majority of the cats in my care have been abused, neglected, & sick before being taken in. So, choosing the right placement for the new kittens that haven’t experienced abuse or neglect is extremely important to me. It’s the compassion and love for them that keeps me going, but it can weigh on me really often when we take on new cats. The dynamics change and kitties are unhappy for awhile until things calm down and/or the trapped cats are returned. The conflict and unhappiness that can occur during those times is why I can no longer take in others from different locations. I can deal with some conflict but pure unhappiness is not an option and we do not have the space for more cats. I’ve been struggling with compassion fatigue with the inclusion of the second location, as I worry about the adults returning in 100° heat after being inside. We released one that appeared to be acclimated just fine, but he has not returned. I do hope he found a home and isn’t harmed. Unfortunately, he was not microchipped. I typically microchip so if strays are adopted or taken in, I will have peace of mind that they are okay after not showing up to eat. We are currently looking for Nick(le). He is a very sweet cat so hoping he found his home. I do know others feed the cats around my family.
