A biblical approach to emotional intelligence gives leaders a practical standard: know what you're feeling, govern your response, and treat others with empathy.

That balance matters most when pressure rises. Self-awareness helps you notice anger, fear, or defensiveness before it drives your next decision. Discipline creates space between the feeling and your response. Empathy keeps you curious about what someone else may be experiencing.

Proverbs 16:32 calls patience and control of one's spirit a greater achievement than taking a city. James 1:19 offers a clear leadership practice: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. A short instruction, with real consequences for how we handle disagreement.

For leaders, listening before speaking is a form of emotional regulation. It gives you time to identify your reaction, understand the other person's concern, and choose words that serve the conversation rather than your impulse.

A useful daily practice is to reflect in prayer: What am I feeling? What triggered it? What response would reflect wisdom and love? Then, in conversation, listen long enough to understand before you decide what to say.

Honest self-awareness without discipline can turn into reaction. Discipline without empathy can feel cold. Leadership calls for all three: clear awareness of your own emotions, restraint in how you act on them, and genuine attention to others.

A steady spirit. A more thoughtful response. Better leadership in the moments that test it.
