On November 3rd, 1948, a United States Air Force (USAF) Boeing B-29 Superfortress took off from RAF Burtonwood near Warrington, Cheshire, on a routine flight. On 3 November 1948, a USAF B-29 crashed near Glossop in Derbyshire at Higher Shelf Stones on the Bleaklow moorland plateau. As part of a routine daytime flight at about 10:15, the aircraft left RAF Scampton near Lincoln and headed towards Burtonwood near Warrington, a base of the US Air Force. Pilot Landon Tanner and co-pilot Harry Stroud were flying on instruments due to low cloud cover in the area. The crew believed it had passed the hills and began descending based on flight time. At about 11:00 the aircraft hit the ground at 610m above sea level, 300m north east of the summit of Higher Shelf Stones, and it was engulfed in flames. All 11 crew members and 2 military passengers perished in the crash.

In 1988, a memorial was erected at the site by servicemen from RAF Finningley, with a plaque in memory of those who died in the crash.

Much of the wreckage is still exposed, including the Duplex-Cyclone engines, wing sections, fuselage sections, undercarriage and gun turrets. One of the gun turrets is on display at the air museum in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
