How to plan small business marketing without the burnout

imageImagine that it’s a standard Tuesday morning. You’re trying to edit a daily vlog for TikTok, your Facebook Ads manager is open in another tab (you're sinking money into it, but you aren't entirely sure how to track if it’s working) and you’ve just been offered a ‘too-good-to-miss’ deal on a full-page print ad in an industry magazine.

It feels like a great price, so you tentatively hand over hundreds for the ad space, hoping and praying it brings in some leads.

By Friday, you’re completely exhausted, your brain is fried and you’re left wondering why you're working this hard on promotion when your sales are still flatlining.

If this sounds familiar, welcome to the world of Spaghetti Marketing, the exhausting habit of throwing random ideas at the wall just to see what sticks.

You have an actual business to run. Marketing doesn’t need to be a massive, time-consuming headache. It’s all about focusing on what truly matters and having a simple system in place.

The early lesson I had to learn: do one thing well

When I was first building my business, I fell into the exact same trap. I thought that to be successful, I had to be absolutely everywhere doing everything all at once.

But one of the biggest, most expensive marketing lessons I learned early on was this: Do one thing well.

It is far better to find one channel or one promotional tactic that you know works for your business and stick at it until you master it. When you try to use every single marketing channel under the sun, you spread yourself incredibly thin. You end up doing ten things poorly instead of one or two things brilliantly. To protect your sanity and your cash flow, you need a clear, focused plan.

Reactive vs. proactive marketing (and why you’re spending too much)

When you’re running a business, marketing generally falls into two categories: reactive and proactive.

  • Reactive Marketing: This is when you’re constantly chasing trends, panic-posting, or buying ad space on a whim because everyone else is talking about it. The massive problem here is that you never truly know what is actually working. You get trapped doing everything, but only a tiny portion of your effort is making a real impact on your sales. It actively drains your cash flow and your energy.

  • Proactive Marketing: This is what happens when you step back and zoom out. Being proactive means knowing exactly who you are targeting, what they want, and exactly how you are going to get in front of them.

Crucially, proactive marketing doesn’t have to ****always be online. There are so many incredible ‘offline’ channels for finding ready-to-buy customers, like going to local networking events, speaking at industry conferences, launching a targeted podcast, or attending community meet-ups.

The perfect mix of activities is entirely different for every single business. That is why you cannot just copy what a competitor is doing on Instagram; you need a personalised plan that fits your goals.

Aligning your activities to real revenue

When you have a proper marketing plan in place, your entire relationship with your business changes.

Instead of waking up stressed every Monday, you sit down and do your strategic thinking upfront for the entire quarter. You decide on your core goals, pick the 2 or 3 specific channels that make sense for your audience, and then you know exactly what you need to do on a weekly basis. The guesswork completely vanishes.

More importantly, a solid plan connects all of your activities together so nothing is running in isolation.

Think about the journey your customer takes. A great marketing plan ensures that whether someone finds you through an email, a networking event, a paid ad, or a collaboration, they experience the exact same brand message. Every single touchpoint works together like a seamless machine, gently guiding a stranger from ‘never heard of you’ to ‘happily entering their credit card details.’

Everything is tied back to measurement. At the end of the month, you look at the data. You see exactly what worked so you can do more of it, and you see what didn't work so well so you can improve it. There’s less guesswork and wasted budgets.
