A man was shot by police while they were serving a search warrant in Washington County Friday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police were at a home on Oak Street in the city of Washington around 6:30 a.m. to serve a search warrant.

Investigators at the scene told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that the warrant was in relation to the alleged possession of child pornography.

When troopers knocked on the door of the home, a woman answered the door and let them inside.

Police say when they entered, the woman's son had a gun and troopers fired, hitting the man.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown.

City of Washington Mayor Jojo Burgess said the victim is his cousin. He said the victim has had instances with police in the past, but those times had ended peacefully.

"Operations with this individual have happened before without this type of outcome, and it's been peaceful and cooperative. How this one went differently, someone's got to answer something. And it's very personal to me because that's a family member," Burgess said.

He said that this person is deaf, has a mental disability, and does not leave the house.

"I'm not here to criticize anyone or say anything, but something was missed. This should not have happened. We need to have those answers on what it was," Burgess said.

Burgess said city of Washington police were not involved in this operation and that the family is looking for answers.

"Investigators got to give the officers 72 hours to decompress from all this and stuff like that, but we got a family that needs answers right now, because, again, this is not the first interaction that these individuals have had with law enforcement. For this to be the outcome is baffling to me," Burgess said.
