Some words from the artist
I started miniature sculpting after studying a Master’s degree in Video Game 3D Art in 2012.
After spending some time in the video game industry, I discovered a real passion for 3D sculpting with ZBrush.
At that time, I knew almost nothing about 3D printing until around 2018–2019. Once I realized what I could create as a 3D artist, I immediately started sculpting environment pieces and miniatures. It was incredible to think that I could create my own Warhammer-style miniatures and paint them just like when I was a child.
On the origins and challenges behind Michael the Monster
For this miniature, my main inspiration was the monster from the video game Evolve. I’m sure some fans of the game recognized it right away!
The idea itself actually came from my own Tribes community. One of my subscribers requested it, and I usually try to listen closely to my supporters and their suggestions. So after some time, I felt like I had to make it.
The biggest challenge I faced was trying to capture the feeling of a predator that hunts you, stalks you, and should terrify you... if you’re even lucky enough to see it ;)
I sculpted the outer parts of the body by hand, using thick reptilian skin brushes. After establishing a guide for where the textures should flow, I worked on every single fold and spike one by one !!! every detail you can paint or see was individually crafted! Honestly, I had to rest my eyes for two separate sessions before I could finally finish all the gray textured areas you can see in the renders. This creature took more than a week of work before it reached the final look I wanted for it.The hardest part was definitely the posing, along with the countless hours spent refining tiny details to give the body proper contrast and visual coherence. This miniature was created exclusively for you, followers of OIASS.
