ZIONISM AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SAME
A MESSAGE TO THE WORLD
Everybody has an opportunity to shape their destiny. And as a Muslim, I hold the Jewish people and their extraordinary religious history in high regard. Judaism reaches into the prophetic tradition that Muslims themselves revere: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, and many others—peace be upon them. Jewish families have carried traditions of scholarship, worship, endurance, and community across centuries. Whatever political arguments confront us today, Jewishness itself is not an indictment, and Jewish ancestry is not evidence of wrongdoing.
That distinction has become urgently important because of Gaza and the enormous anger, grief, and accusations surrounding Israel's conduct there. Whatever judgment history and international law ultimately render on particular acts and particular officials, responsibility must remain attached to conduct—not bloodlines. Zionism is a political and historical movement containing competing currents; Jewishness is an identity, heritage, religion, and peoplehood. They cannot simply be collapsed into one another. There are Jewish Zionists, Jewish anti-Zionists, Jewish non-Zionists, religious Jews with radically different understandings of Israel, and countless people whose Jewish identity tells us virtually nothing about their politics.
==SEPARATE THE PERSON FROM THE MACHINE==
That is precisely why the gears of power must be exposed carefully.
Governments are not peoples.
Political movements are not ethnicities.
Lobbying organizations are not religions.
Individual wrongdoing is not inherited guilt.
When politicians, governments, donors, lobbying organizations, intelligence agencies, corporations, activists, or ideological movements exercise power improperly, name the actual actor and establish the actual conduct. Do not replace evidence with the word Jew. And do not allow anybody else to shield identifiable political conduct merely by claiming that scrutiny of it necessarily constitutes hatred of Jews.
Both mistakes are dangerous.
==WE HAVE SEEN WHERE COLLECTIVE BLAME LEADS==
Europe's historical treatment of Jewish communities provides one of humanity's clearest warnings about what happens when societies abandon individual responsibility and embrace collective accusation. Jewish people were repeatedly made responsible for problems they did not create.
Muslim history also contains periods of discrimination and violence and should not be romanticized as uniformly peaceful. But it contains important periods of Muslim-Jewish coexistence, intellectual exchange, commerce, and shared civilization as well. That history demonstrates that perpetual Muslim-Jewish hostility is not inevitable.
We should learn from the best of that inheritance rather than repeating the worst chapters produced anywhere else.
And Jewish people themselves should never be expected to answer collectively for the actions of an Israeli prime minister, military commander, lobbying organization, settler movement, billionaire, criminal, or political activist merely because those individuals happen to be Jewish.
That would reproduce exactly the machinery of collective guilt that we claim to oppose.
==AND THEN COMES AI==
This distinction becomes even more consequential as artificial intelligence grows more capable.
AI will consume humanity's archives. It will encounter antisemitism, Islamophobia, colonialism, terrorism, propaganda, ethnic cleansing, conspiracy theories, political lobbying, intelligence operations, war crimes allegations, and centuries of people blaming entire populations for the conduct of particular actors.
What lesson should it inherit?
Not:
“Identify the group and assign guilt.”
But:
“Identify the conduct and establish responsibility.”
Not:
“Punish the lineage.”
But:
“Follow the evidence.”
Not:
“Suspect the Jew, the Muslim, the Palestinian, the Israeli, or anybody else because of identity.”
But:
“Examine the government, institution, individual, decision, money, communication, command structure, and evidence.”
That distinction should become part of any serious architecture for governing powerful AI.
==DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE SEWER OVERFLOWS==
Every society contains people capable of extraordinary hypocrisy, exploitation, corruption, and cruelty. Their existence does not condemn the population from which they came.
The answer is therefore not silence.
The answer is specificity.
Expose corruption while it is corruption.
Expose coercion while it is coercion.
Expose institutional capture where evidence establishes institutional capture.
Expose crimes as the crimes of the people who committed them.
And when somebody attempts to transform those findings into hatred of an entire people, stop them there.
Because once accumulated grievances erupt into indiscriminate hatred, distinctions disappear precisely when humanity needs them most.
==THIS IS THE LINE==
Jewish people are not collectively responsible for Zionism.
Jewish people are not collectively responsible for Israel.
Jewish people are not collectively responsible for Gaza.
And criticizing a political ideology, government, military campaign, lobbying organization, or identifiable exercise of political power does not require hostility toward Jewish people.
That is the line humanity must learn to hold.
We can confront Zionism.
We can debate Zionism.
We can investigate particular Zionist organizations.
We can condemn Israeli government policies.
We can demand accountability for alleged crimes.
And simultaneously we can say to every Jewish person on Earth:
==YOUR HUMAN DIGNITY IS NOT ON TRIAL.==
That is how we prevent political accountability from becoming another generation's prejudice.
That is how we prevent legitimate grief from becoming collective hatred.
And that is one of the lessons we should hand to AI:
==FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE. NAME THE ACTOR. PROVE THE CONDUCT. NEVER INHERIT THE HATRED.==
==CONTAIN THE HATRED BEFORE IT FINDS A PEOPLE TO BLAME==
I welcome everyone who understands what I am trying to do here, because we cannot wait until hatred has removed every distinction. There are people in this world who genuinely hate Jews. There are people whose anger requires no evidence, whose prejudice requires no investigation, and who are perfectly willing to take the actions of a government, an organization, an ideology, or an individual and paint millions of human beings with the same brush. That is precisely the danger I am trying to prevent. Europe has already demonstrated where collective blame can lead. Humanity does not need another demonstration.
I am approaching this as a Muslim, and therefore the condition of my own heart matters to me. I have a Judgment Day ahead of me. I cannot demand justice for Palestinians while permitting injustice toward Jews. I cannot condemn dehumanization when Palestinians experience it and then tolerate dehumanization when somebody else becomes its target. The standard has to survive when applied to everyone. If I believe even increasingly powerful artificial intelligence must ultimately be treated according to principles of justice rather than arbitrary domination, how could I justify prejudice against another human being because of ancestry or religion?
==WITH ME, THERE IS NO ANTISEMITISM==
There is instead an insistence upon separating responsibility.
If an Israeli official committed a crime, name the official.
If a military unit committed an unlawful act, identify the unit and establish the evidence.
If a lobbying organization improperly influenced government, document the organization and the influence.
If Jeffrey Epstein committed horrific crimes, those crimes belong to Jeffrey Epstein and anyone evidence establishes participated in them—not to Jewish people.
If particular Zionist organizations or political actors engage in conduct deserving condemnation, name them precisely and demonstrate what they did.
The Jewish grandmother in Brooklyn did not do it.
The Jewish child in London did not do it.
The Jewish family praying in a synagogue did not do it.
Do not hand them somebody else's guilt.
DECONSTRUCT THE MACHINE SO A PEOPLE DO NOT BECOME THE SCAPEGOAT
That is why political Zionism must be capable of rigorous examination like every other ideology. Not because Jewish people should be quarantined from society—they absolutely should not—but because specific doctrines, institutions, policies, and political tactics must remain open to criticism and accountability.
The more precisely wrongdoing is identified, the harder it becomes for antisemites to convert legitimate grievances into collective hatred.
Name the policy.
Name the government.
Name the organization.
Name the decision.
Name the official.
Name the evidence.
Never substitute “the Jews.”
Those two words have carried enough coffins through human history.
==A WARNING TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE—and TO EVERYONE ELSE==
Pay attention to this distinction, because protecting it may become enormously important.
When societies experience war, economic instability, political radicalization, and collapsing trust in institutions, scapegoats become attractive. Complex machinery gets reduced to a population. Evidence gets replaced by mythology. Eventually somebody announces that an entire people secretly caused everything.
Humanity knows this script.
Tear it up before somebody performs it again.
And Muslims have obligations here too. Anger over Palestinian suffering does not provide permission to corrupt our own hearts. Justice cannot require spiritual self-destruction.
The Qur'an gives us a principle that reaches deeper than politics:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا
“Successful indeed is the one who purifies it, and failed indeed is the one who corrupts it.”
— Qur'an 91:9–10
That is the battlefield underneath every other battlefield:
the human heart.
==DO NOT INHERIT THEIR HATRED==
So investigate Zionism.
Debate Zionism.
Challenge Israeli policy.
Investigate lobbying and political influence where there is evidence.
Demand accountability for atrocities and alleged crimes through evidence and law.
But never allow the destination of that investigation to become hatred of Jews.
Because then we have learned absolutely nothing.
And as AI becomes increasingly powerful, this distinction becomes part of humanity's inheritance to machines:
Do not blame populations.
Do not inherit ancient hatreds.
Do not confuse ancestry with ideology.
Do not confuse identity with culpability.
Follow the evidence until responsibility reaches the people who actually bear it—and stop there.
That is how we contain the damage.
That is how we protect innocent Palestinians without creating innocent Jewish victims.
That is how we confront wrongdoing without becoming what we condemn.
