بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

ALLAH HONORED THE BIRTH OF A PROPHET — WHY WOULD YOU DISHONOR THE BIRTH OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ?

A MESSAGE TO MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS ABOUT THE MAWLID

My dear brothers and sisters,

Every year Rabīʿ al-Awwal arrives, and every year some Muslims spend their energy telling other Muslims:

“Do not celebrate.”
“Do not rejoice.”
“His birthday has no significance.”
“Where is your evidence?”

So let us answer with the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Not emotion.

Not culture.

Not slogans.

Let us begin with Allah.

ALLAH MENTIONS AND HONORS THE DAY OF THE BIRTH OF ʿĪSĀ عليه السلام

Allah records the words of Sayyidunā ʿĪsā ibn Maryam عليه السلام:

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدتُ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا

“And peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”

— Qur'an 19:33

Look carefully.

يَوْمَ وُلِدتُ

“The day I was born.”

The Qur'an itself draws our attention to the birth of a prophet.

So please do not tell Muslims that the birth of a prophet is automatically a meaningless date that must never be remembered.

And then ask yourself:

If Allah honors the day of the birth of ʿĪsā عليه السلام in His Book, what should our hearts feel about the coming of Muhammad ﷺ?

You are not more protective of Islam than Allah.

Follow Allah.

ALLAH COMMANDS REJOICING

Allah says:

قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ

“Say: In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy — in that let them rejoice. It is better than what they accumulate.”

— Qur'an 10:58

The word is:

فَلْيَفْرَحُوا

LET THEM REJOICE.

And classical tafsīr did not leave Muhammad ﷺ outside this discussion.

Among the interpretations transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما is:

فضل الله العلم، ورحمته محمد ﷺ

“The bounty of Allah is knowledge, and His mercy is Muhammad ﷺ.”

Classical tafsīr also preserves the interpretation:

فلتفرح قريش بأن محمدًا منهم

“Let Quraysh rejoice that Muhammad is from among them.”

Not every mufassir interpreted Qur'an 10:58 identically. Other great scholars interpreted Allah's bounty and mercy as Islam, the Qur'an, guidance, and related blessings.

But that does not weaken the central point.

Because Allah explicitly says elsewhere:

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds.”

— Qur'an 21:107

Muhammad ﷺ is unquestionably a mercy sent by Allah.

So when Allah tells me to rejoice in His bounty and mercy, why would I refuse to rejoice that Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ?

THEN RASULULLAH ﷺ HIMSELF ANSWERS THE QUESTION

You ask:

“Where did the Prophet ﷺ celebrate or acknowledge his birth?”

Listen to his own words.

When Rasulullah ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday, he said:

ذَاكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ، وَيَوْمٌ بُعِثْتُ أَوْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيَّ فِيهِ

“That is the day on which I was born, and the day on which I was commissioned or revelation was sent down to me.”

— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim

There is your evidence.

The Prophet ﷺ connected an act of worship with the day of his birth.

He did not say:

“My birth is irrelevant.”

He specifically said:

ذَاكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ

“THAT IS THE DAY ON WHICH I WAS BORN.”

So if you reject every later form of Mawlid and want nothing except something explicitly established from Rasulullah ﷺ, then I have a simple invitation:

FAST MONDAY.

Make Monday your Mawlid.

Fast.

Send ṣalawāt.

Read his sīrah.

Teach your children about him.

Give charity.

Feed somebody.

Follow his Sunnah.

Thank Allah for sending him.

Do what you know is unquestionably established.

HIS BIRTH HAS CONSEQUENCES FOR EVERY MUSLIM

Think about what his arrival means.

Through Muhammad ﷺ, Allah delivered the Qur'an to humanity.

Through Muhammad ﷺ, we learned the Sunnah.

Through Muhammad ﷺ, we learned how to pray.

Through Muhammad ﷺ, we learned how to perform Ḥajj.

Through Muhammad ﷺ, generations learned the details of worship, character, mercy, repentance and the road toward Allah.

Allah is the source of guidance.

Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger who delivered that guidance to us.

So how can the arrival of Rasulullah ﷺ be insignificant?

His birth changed human history.

DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER

My brothers and sisters, listen carefully.

I am not telling you that disagreement about a particular Mawlid gathering removes you from Islam.

I am not declaring you a kāfir because you disagree about a date, procession, gathering, poetry, food, decorations, or any particular cultural practice.

That is not my argument.

My warning is different.

Do not allow disagreement about how Muslims commemorate the Prophet ﷺ to transform into contempt for those who love him.

Do not allow opposition to Mawlid to become indifference toward his coming.

Do not allow arguments about bidʿah to train your heart to hear Muslims praising Rasulullah ﷺ and immediately become angry.

And above all:

Never allow disagreement over a celebration to become disrespect toward Rasulullah ﷺ himself.

That is where you should fear for your heart.

BE AMONG THE LOVERS

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us one of the most beautiful promises imaginable:

الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ

“A person will be with whom he loves.”

So I choose love.

I want to be among those who love Muhammad ﷺ.

I want to be among those who send ṣalawāt upon him.

I want to learn his life.

I want my children to know him.

I want to thank Allah for him.

I want to follow his Sunnah.

And I hope that Allah gathers us with His beloved Messenger ﷺ on the Day when we desperately need Allah's mercy.

Allah alone saves.

Allah alone judges.

And Allah has honored Muhammad ﷺ with the Great Intercession — al-Shafāʿah al-ʿUẓmā.

So why would I spend Rabīʿ al-Awwal fighting Muslims because they are expressing happiness over Rasulullah ﷺ?

TO THOSE WHO DO NOT CELEBRATE

My brother.

My sister.

You do not have to celebrate exactly as I celebrate.

If you believe certain practices are impermissible, leave those practices.

But do not fight love itself.

Do not fight gratitude itself.

Do not fight ṣalawāt.

Do not fight people learning the sīrah.

Do not fight Muslims feeding people.

Do not fight Muslims remembering the mercy Allah sent into this world.

And please do not tell us that the birth of Muhammad ﷺ has no significance.

The Prophet ﷺ himself told us why he fasted Monday:

ذَاكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ

“That is the day on which I was born.”

If that is enough for Rasulullah ﷺ,

let it be enough for us.

LET ALLAH BE ENOUGH PROOF FOR YOU

Allah mentions the blessed day on which ʿĪsā عليه السلام was born.

Allah commands:

فَلْيَفْرَحُوا

“LET THEM REJOICE.”

Allah describes Muhammad ﷺ as:

رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“A MERCY TO ALL THE WORLDS.”

And Muhammad ﷺ himself fasted Monday and explicitly connected that day with:

يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ

“THE DAY ON WHICH I WAS BORN.”

So my brothers and sisters:

Stay with what is clear.

Love Rasulullah ﷺ.

Honor Rasulullah ﷺ.

Follow Rasulullah ﷺ.

Send ṣalawāt upon Rasulullah ﷺ.

Thank Allah for Rasulullah ﷺ.

And if you remain uncertain about every other form of Mawlid:

FAST MONDAY.

Do it because your Prophet ﷺ did it.

Do it with gratitude to Allah.

Do it with love.

And when somebody asks you why, simply repeat his words:

ذَاكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيهِ

“THAT IS THE DAY ON WHICH I WAS BORN.”

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ

Alḥamdulillāh for Muhammad ﷺ.

Alḥamdulillāh for his blessed birth.

Alḥamdulillāh for the Mercy Allah sent to all the worlds.
