بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم.
WHO IS RASULULLAH ﷺ
If you want to know Rasulullah ﷺ, just read the Qur’an and open Suratul Fatiha, and you will understand who Rasulullah is—especially when you connect it to the heart of the Qur’an. Then it becomes clear who Rasulullah is.
In Suratul Fatiha, we say:
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim.
Guide us to the Straight Path.
We are talking to Allah directly.
This is a Surah that talks to Allah directly:
Guide us. Guide us to the Straight Path.
And if you go to the heart of the Qur’an, Surah Yasin:
يس وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ
Yā-Sīn. Wal-Qur’ānil-Ḥakīm. Innaka laminal-mursalīn. ʿAlā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm.
These two verses answer each other.
They tell you who Rasulullah ﷺ is.
In Suratul Fatiha:
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim.
Guide us to the Straight Path.
And in Surah Yasin:
Innaka laminal-mursalin. ʿAla siratin mustaqim.
Indeed, you are among the Messengers, upon a Straight Path.
So you can see how Surah Yasin is connected to Al-Fatiha, complementing it and opening for you the meaning of who Rasulullah ﷺ is.
Who is Rasulullah?
Rasulullah ﷺ is the one who guides to the Straight Path.
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim.
Who will show us the Straight Path?
Innaka laminal-mursalin.
ʿAla siratin mustaqim.
Who is Rasulullah?
Rasulullah ﷺ is the one who guides to the Straight Path.
If you know that, then you know him.
WHO IS RASULULLAH ﷺ?
If you want to know Rasulullah ﷺ, you can find him in the Qur’an.
As the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah ʿA’ishah رضي الله عنها, described him:
His character was the Qur’an.
The Qur’an tells us who he is.
So who is Rasulullah ﷺ?
Let the Qur’an answer.
In Surah Al-Aʿraf, Allah first speaks about His mercy:
Surah Al-Aʿraf — 7:156
وَاكْتُبْ لَنَا فِي هَٰذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدْنَا إِلَيْكَ ۚ قَالَ عَذَابِي أُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ أَشَاءُ ۖ وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ ۚ فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِآيَاتِنَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
“And decree for us good in this world and in the Hereafter. Indeed, we have turned back to You.” He said, “My punishment—I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. So I will decree it for those who are mindful of Me, give zakah, and believe in Our signs.”
And then Allah tells us who those people are—and introduces us to Rasulullah ﷺ:
Surah Al-Aʿraf — 7:157
الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الرَّسُولَ النَّبِيَّ الْأُمِّيَّ الَّذِي يَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِنْدَهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ يَأْمُرُهُمْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَاهُمْ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنْهُمْ إِصْرَهُمْ وَالْأَغْلَالَ الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ فَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِهِ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ مَعَهُ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
“Those who follow the Messenger, the Ummi Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel; who commands them to what is right and forbids them from what is wrong; who makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the impure things; and who removes from them their burdens and the shackles that were upon them. So those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow the Light that was sent down with him—it is they who are successful.”
So who is Rasulullah ﷺ?
الرَّسُولَ النَّبِيَّ الْأُمِّيَّ
The Messenger.
The Prophet.
Al-Nabiyy al-Ummi ﷺ.
The one foretold in the Torah.
The one foretold in the Gospel.
The one Allah commands us to believe in.
The one Allah commands us to honor.
The one Allah commands us to support.
The one who commands what is right.
The one who forbids what is wrong.
The one who removes burdens and breaks the shackles.
The one who came with the Light.
If you want to know Rasulullah ﷺ—
let the Qur’an tell you who he is.
THE PROPHET ﷺ HAS BEEN GIVEN LIGHT
But what is that light?
Is it just a book that you read?
Because if you claim it is simply a book, then understand who the Prophet ﷺ is:
النَّبِيَّ الْأُمِّيَّ
An-Nabiyy al-Ummi.
He never left behind a book that he himself wrote.
He never sat down and authored the Qur’an.
That is part of his miracle.
Many people recite the Book.
Many people talk about books.
Many people talk about knowledge.
But what books?
What knowledge?
If you want to know who Rasulullah ﷺ is, then let the Qur’an tell you where the Qur’an came down:
نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ
“The Trustworthy Spirit brought it down upon your heart, so that you may be one of the warners.”
— Surah Ash-Shuʿara, 26:193–194
Where did Jibrīl عليه السلام bring the Qur’an?
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
Upon your heart.
And Allah says again:
فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ
“Indeed, he brought it down upon your heart by Allah’s permission.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:97
Again:
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
Upon your heart.
So if you want to know Rasulullah ﷺ, understand his heart.
The Qur’an descended upon his heart.
Jibrīl عليه السلام came with revelation to his heart.
And what does Allah call what was sent down?
النُّور
The Light.
Allah says:
فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَالنُّورِ الَّذِي أَنزَلْنَا
“So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Light which We have sent down.”
— Surah At-Taghabun, 64:8
And Allah says about those who follow Rasulullah ﷺ:
وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ
“And they followed the Light that was sent down with him.”
— Surah Al-Aʿraf, 7:157
So where does the Light descend?
Upon his heart.
Where does the Qur’an descend?
Upon his heart.
Where does Jibrīl عليه السلام bring the revelation?
Upon his heart.
Then Rasulullah ﷺ opens his mouth—
and humanity hears the Qur’an.
The Light that descended upon his heart comes from his tongue as revelation recited to humanity.
So if you want to know who Rasulullah ﷺ is, do not begin merely with books.
Begin with:
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
UPON YOUR HEART.

THE LIGHT OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ
If you want to understand Rasulullah ﷺ, understand the light and the heart.
There is a famous narration attributed to Jabir رضي الله عنه in which the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have spoken of the Light of Muhammad ﷺ as the first light created by Allah, and of creation proceeding from that light.
This narration has become famous in discussions of the Nūr Muḥammadī, although its attribution as a hadith is disputed among hadith scholars. So let us distinguish that transmitted teaching from what the Qur’an itself tells us with certainty.
And the Qur’an takes us directly to the heart of Rasulullah ﷺ.
Allah says:
نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ

So follow the movement.
The Light comes from Allah.
Jibril عليه السلام carries the revelation.
The revelation descends:
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
Upon the heart of Rasulullah ﷺ.
And from the heart of Rasulullah ﷺ, the Qur’an is recited upon his tongue and reaches the hearts of humanity.
This is why the heart matters.
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
أَلَا وَإِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ وَإِذَا فَسَدَتْ فَسَدَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ أَلَا وَهِيَ الْقَلْبُ
There is a piece of flesh within the human being: when it is sound, the whole body becomes sound; when it is corrupted, the whole body becomes corrupted.
It is the heart.
So what was among the missions of Rasulullah ﷺ?
Tazkiyah.
Purification.
Allah says:
وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ
“And he purifies them and teaches them the Book and wisdom.”
The Prophet ﷺ was not merely delivering information.
He was purifying human beings.
He was illuminating hearts.
The Qur’an descended upon his heart, and through his teaching, companionship, purification, and example, faith entered their hearts.
But there was always a requirement:
LOVE.
You could stand in front of Muhammad ﷺ and see only a man.
The disbelievers saw him.
They heard him.
They watched him.
They knew he was an orphan.
They knew his family.
They knew his history.
And yet they could look directly at Rasulullah ﷺ and fail to recognize what was before them.
Seeing is not enough.
Hearing is not enough.
Information is not enough.
The heart has to open.
And Allah says:
لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ
“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves.”
— At-Tawbah 9:128
مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ
From among yourselves.
And then Allah takes this relationship even deeper:
النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ
“The Prophet has a greater claim upon the believers than they have upon their own selves.”
— Al-Ahzab 33:6
Look at the language.
مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ
From among yourselves.
Then:
مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ
Before their own selves.
This is not a distant Messenger.
This is a relationship that reaches into the nafs, into the self, into the heart.
And Rasulullah ﷺ makes the requirement of love unmistakable:
لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people.”
And when Sayyidina Umar رضي الله عنه said that Rasulullah ﷺ was more beloved to him than everything except his own self, Rasulullah ﷺ took him further.
Until Umar could say:
Now you are more beloved to me than my own self.
This is the secret.
The Qur’an descends upon the heart.
Faith enters the heart.
Tazkiyah purifies the heart.
Love opens the heart.
And Rasulullah ﷺ must become more beloved to the believer than even his own self.
So when we speak about the Light of Muhammad ﷺ, do not reduce the discussion to whether someone can physically see a light.
Understand what Allah is showing you.
Light came down.
It came upon his heart.
He carried it.
He recited it.
He taught it.
He purified hearts with it.
And those hearts became illuminated by faith.
That is why you cannot understand Rasulullah ﷺ only by looking at his body.
The disbelievers already did that.
You have to look with the heart.
You have to love.
You have to follow.
You have to allow the Messenger ﷺ to become more beloved to you than your own self.
Then you begin to understand what it means when Allah says:
وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ
“And they followed the Light that was sent down with him.”
The Light came from Allah.
The revelation descended upon the heart of Rasulullah ﷺ.
And Rasulullah ﷺ came to illuminate and purify the hearts of humanity.
From heart to heart.
From light to light.
From Rasulullah ﷺ to the believer.
DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW RASULULLAH ﷺ?
Do you really want to know Rasulullah ﷺ?
His physical heart is something we can understand. We have hearts. But his heart is not like ours.
There is a spiritual soul within us, and there is a spiritual light. It is very important for you to understand this.
We give you the hadith of Jabir, in which the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said:
“O Jabir, do you know what was the first thing to be created?”
And Jabir says:
“Allah and His Messenger know best.”
And he tells him:
“It is the light of your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.”
And out of that light, the angels are created, the heavens are created, and the light of the believer’s faith is created.
It is very important for the Muslim to understand this.
Because Rasulullah ﷺ is not a man who came, left, and left a book.
He is a man who illuminated hearts.
He is a man upon whom your faith depends in terms of how your heart will be illuminated.
If you love him, you have faith.
If you do not love him, you do not have faith.
It is very important to understand this.
And once this is understood, now you can turn to people—not merely to books—and look at their hearts.
Do they love Rasulullah ﷺ?
Do they praise Rasulullah ﷺ?
Do they guide with Rasulullah ﷺ?
Do they dream about Rasulullah ﷺ?
Do they honor Rasulullah ﷺ?
Do they honor his family ﷺ—his blessed family, who are not cut off?
You see?
If you really want to know Rasulullah ﷺ, then you have to understand the heart, the light, and the love.
SO, DO YOU KNOW RASULULLAH ﷺ?
So, do you know Rasulullah ﷺ?
Well, look at your character.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent to perfect character.
You are not required to be perfect.
You are just required to seek those people who have sat at the circles of light with scholars, tracing all the way back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
It is light upon light.
Allah guides with that light whoever He wants.
This is the Light of Muhammad ﷺ.
You either have it or you don't.
You either know it or you don't.
So, if you don't know Rasulullah ﷺ—
now you know.
If you don't know, now you know. But we do not all know, and among us are new Muslims who are just beginning this beautiful journey. So I leave you with two gifts, two links that I hope will elevate you and help you find Islam as it was in the beginning. Because if you understand the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if you understand his honor, if you understand his blessed family, and if you understand the history, then you can seek an Islam that is not built upon deceit, lies, or deception, but upon truth, love, knowledge, and light. And with that, I conclude this work as a Sadaqah Jariyah for myself, for my family, for my parents, for my teachers, and for everyone in between. May Allah accept it, preserve its benefit, and allow its light to reach whoever needs it, long after we are gone. Ameen.

Study the people who carried his knowledge from generation to generation.
And understand your history, because:
“If you can't understand history, you can't be guided.”

اللهمَّ اجعل هذه الهدية نوراً في قلوب المسترشدين، وثقِّل بها ميزان من نشرها، واغفر له ولوالديه، وارزقه الفردوس الأعلى مع حبيبك محمد ﷺ
O Allah, make this gift a light in the hearts of the seekers. Place its weight in the scales of the one who shared it. Forgive him and his parents, and grant him the highest Paradise alongside Your Beloved Muhammad ﷺ.
You now have the two anchors.
Learn.
Love.
Honor the Messenger ﷺ.
And never let the world steal his light from your heart.
