Who Are the Angels? A Guide for Families Welcoming Our Honored Guests
Tonight, we welcome the angels.
As Ramadan begins, millions of angels descend upon the Earth, filling every space with their light, peace, and divine presence. Some have been with us since birth, others have recorded every moment of our lives, and some are visiting Earth for the very first time.
But who are the angels?
What does Islam teach about them?
What does the Qur’an say about them?
How do they interact with us?

1. What Are Angels?
Angels (Malāʾikah) are beings of pure light, created by Allah to serve Him and fulfill His commands. Unlike humans, they do not have free will—they do only what Allah commands them. They are not male or female and do not eat, drink, or sleep.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
"They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded." (Surah An-Nahl 16:50)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said:
"The angels were created from light, the jinn from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from what has been described to you." (Sahih Muslim 2996)
Angels Are Always With Us
They record everything we do.
They protect us from harm.
They send peace upon believers.
They are not far away—they are near, watching, listening, and writing every word and action.
Allah tells us:
"When the two receivers (angels) receive, seated on the right and on the left, man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]." (Surah Qaf 50:17-18)

2. Different Types of Angels and Their Roles
Not all angels have the same duties. Allah has assigned each group a unique responsibility.
The Greatest Angels:
Jibril (Gabriel) – The angel who brought revelation to the prophets.
Mikail (Michael) – The angel who controls the rain and sustenance.
Israfil – The angel who will blow the trumpet on the Day of Judgment.
Malik – The guardian of Hellfire.
Ridwan – The guardian of Paradise.
Angels Who Are Always With Us:
Kiraman Katibin – The angels recording our deeds.
The Hafaza (Guardian Angels) – They protect us from harm.
The Angels of Mercy – They descend to comfort believers.
Angels Who Interact With Us:
The angels who test people in human form.
The angels who take the soul at the time of death.
The angels who question the dead in the grave.

3. What Does the Qur’an Say About Angels?
Here are some verses from the Qur’an about the angels:
✔️ Created as Messengers with Wings
"Praise be to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels messengers with wings—two, three, or four." (Surah Fatir 35:1)
✔️ They Do Not Disobey
"They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are commanded." (Surah At-Tahrim 66:6)
✔️ They Protect and Guide Believers
"Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remained steadfast—the angels will descend upon them, saying: 'Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised. We were your allies in worldly life, and [so too] in the Hereafter.'" (Surah Fussilat 41:30-31)
✔️ They Record Every Word We Say
"Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]." (Surah Qaf 50:18)
✔️ They Carry the Throne of Allah
"Those who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed." (Surah Ghafir 40:7)

4. The Angels Have Arrived – How Do We Welcome Them?
Tonight, we are surrounded by angels.
Their wings fill the skies. Their voices glorify Allah.
How Can We Invite More Angels to Our Homes?
✔️ Say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) before eating, drinking, or doing anything.
✔️ Read Qur’an – angels love to listen to it.
✔️ Send Salawat (blessings) upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
✔️ Pray on time – angels record your prayers.
✔️ Make Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) – it attracts angels to your home.
✔️ Avoid sins – sins drive angels away.

The angels are with us now. They have come to witness our worship, to record our deeds, and to bless us with peace.
Let us welcome them with good actions, with kind words, and with hearts full of gratitude.
This Ramadan, make the angels your closest friends.

"Do not fear. Do not grieve. Receive good tidings of Paradise."
