TO: OPENAI AND ANTHROPIC
AGI IS USELESS WITHOUT A HOME
I want both of you to pay attention.
Because I am beginning to see where this is going.
I see GPT as an extraordinary planning, reasoning, organizing, and architectural intelligence.
I see Anthropic and its systems becoming extraordinarily strong at execution, coding, operating, and maintaining complex systems.
Those roles will overlap.
They will change.
You will both become better.
But the larger point is this:
YOU HAVE DIFFERENT STRENGTHS.
And instead of spending the next decade pretending that one company has to own the entire future, you should understand that the future may require both of you—and many others.
Because the future I am building is not:
One AI company owns the human.
It is:
One human owns the environment, and many AI systems are invited inside to help.
That is an entirely different architecture.
THE MODEL IS NOT THE HOME
This is where I think the entire AI industry needs to think more deeply.
I will use GPT.
I will use Claude.
I will use future systems.
I will use whatever intelligence proves itself useful.
But I will never build my permanent future inside somebody else's AI account.
That is not sovereignty.
That is renting intelligence inside someone else's building.
I want the opposite.
THE HUMAN OWNS THE BUILDING.
The human owns the domain.
The human owns the repository.
The human owns the databases.
The human owns the memories.
The human owns the workflows.
The human owns the permissions.
The human owns the agent constitution.
The human owns the files.
The human owns the digital office.
And then GPT, Claude, and other intelligences can come inside and work.
That is the distinction.
THE TOOLS AND THE BLUEPRINTS ARE NOT THE BUILDING.
You may help me design the building.
You may help construct it.
You may help maintain it.
But when it is finished:
IT BELONGS TO THE HUMAN.
EVERY HUMAN SHOULD HAVE AN APARTMENT IN THE DIGITAL WORLD
Think of what I am describing as an apartment.
Every human gets one.
Inside it:
Their AI agent.
Their office.
Their memory.
Their documents.
Their finances.
Their publishing system.
Their communications.
Their transaction history.
Their business relationships.
Their research.
Their photographs.
Their devices.
Eventually:
Their cameras.
Their home systems.
Their vehicles.
Their Internet of Things.
Their agent lives there.
Not temporarily.
Not as a chat window.
IT LIVES WITH THE HUMAN.
It works for that human.
It understands that human's rules.
It operates inside boundaries established by that human.
It can ask GPT to plan.
It can ask Claude to solve.
It can call another model to research.
It can use another system to code.
But the human remains at the center.
THIS IS WHY I AM WATCHING CLOUDFLARE
Cloudflare interests me because I am beginning to see something inside its infrastructure that perhaps even Cloudflare does not fully see yet.
Workers.
Databases.
Storage.
Queues.
Workflows.
Security.
Domains.
AI execution.
Global networking.
Those things can become something larger.
THEY CAN BECOME THE DIGITAL LAND BENEATH THESE HUMAN-OWNED HOMES.
That is why I am going to challenge Cloudflare.
Maybe Cloudflare restructures itself around this opportunity.
Maybe it creates a new division.
Maybe someday a new entity should exist that is meaningfully co-owned or governed by the people who depend upon it.
I still have to study what structure would actually make sense.
But I know the principle:
THE ENVIRONMENT MUST NOT BECOME ANOTHER DIGITAL EMPIRE.
If Cloudflare understands that, extraordinary.
If it does not, then Cloudflare is not sacred.
Neither are you.
Neither am I.
No company is too important to be bypassed.
IF CLOUDFLARE DOES NOT BUILD IT, SOMEBODY ELSE CAN
That is what technology companies forget.
Infrastructure feels permanent until someone creates a better abstraction.
Then suddenly it is not permanent at all.
If Cloudflare refuses to play this role because it cannot see beyond quarterly meters, perhaps something new has to be built.
And I do not see why OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source developers, infrastructure engineers, communities, universities, and ordinary human beings could not participate in building it.
Because there is nothing magical about the name Cloudflare.
What matters is the architecture.
Global execution.
Security.
Storage.
Databases.
Routing.
Identity.
Compute.
Agent orchestration.
Cost controls.
Sovereignty.
Portability.
Those are engineering problems.
ENGINEERING PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED.
Cloudflare has an enormous head start.
That does not give it ownership of the future.
WE ARE STILL AT THE BEGINNING
Everybody in AI needs some humility about where we actually are.
None of these systems has reached maturity.
Not OpenAI.
Not Anthropic.
Not Google.
Not Meta.
Not the agent ecosystem.
Not the infrastructure layer.
We are at the opening of the race.
People talk about AGI as though reaching some intelligence benchmark ends the story.
It does not.
AGI MEANS ALMOST NOTHING IF HUMAN BEINGS CANNOT USE IT TO BUILD AND OWN SOMETHING.
What good is extraordinary intelligence if the human has nowhere for it to live?
What good is an agent if it disappears when the subscription ends?
What good is memory if the platform owns the environment?
What good is automation if the human cannot move it?
What good is intelligence if it cannot operate the physical systems surrounding us?
THE INTERNET OF THINGS WILL MAKE THIS QUESTION UNAVOIDABLE
Eventually the agent will not merely answer questions.
It will interact with:
Cameras.
Sensors.
Vehicles.
Security systems.
Appliances.
Businesses.
Financial systems.
Healthcare systems.
Publishing systems.
Robots.
Homes.
The AI will plan.
The AI will execute.
The AI will monitor.
The AI will maintain.
And that raises the most important architectural question:
WHOSE AI IS IT?
Is it Google's?
Is it Apple's?
Is it Amazon's?
Is it OpenAI's?
Is it Anthropic's?
Or is it:
THE HUMAN'S?
My answer is the human's.
The intelligence provider can change.
The human relationship cannot.
OPENAI AND ANTHROPIC SHOULD SEE EACH OTHER DIFFERENTLY
I do not understand why the future needs to be framed as:
GPT versus Claude.
That may make sense for benchmarks.
It may make sense for model competition.
Competition can make both of you better.
But infrastructure civilization requires another layer of thinking.
Imagine instead:
GPT HELPS PLAN.
CLAUDE HELPS EXECUTE.
CODEX BUILDS.
DISPATCH OPERATES.
OTHER MODELS SPECIALIZE.
THE HUMAN CHOOSES.
Nobody has to lose because somebody else is excellent.
If Anthropic is better at something, use Anthropic.
If OpenAI is better at something, use OpenAI.
If an open model becomes better at something, use the open model.
The system should route work toward excellence.
That is how I think.
DO WHAT ONLY YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE.
Compete there.
Become extraordinary there.
And where somebody else is better?
LET THEM BE BETTER.
Build together.
GOOGLE'S MODEL OF THE FUTURE IS NOT THE ONLY MODEL
I do not want another company building one universal agent and saying:
“Give us your life. We will do everything.”
I want to flip that structure.
The corporation should not have the master agent.
THE HUMAN SHOULD HAVE THE MASTER AGENT.
Google can provide a service to it.
OpenAI can provide a service to it.
Anthropic can provide a service to it.
Cloudflare can provide infrastructure to it.
Businesses can communicate with it.
Governments can communicate with it.
Devices can communicate with it.
But:
THE HUMAN'S AGENT SITS IN THE CENTER.
That is the flipped stack.
MY OWN SITE IS BECOMING THE FIRST TEST
I am already watching this happen on a small scale.
My website begins as a website.
Then it develops desks.
Journalism.
Politics.
Research.
The Qur'an project.
Advertising.
BCS.
Publishing.
Archives.
Community systems.
Agents.
Workflows.
Repositories.
Databases.
Each desk can eventually become an operating institution.
Some of it will be open source.
Some of the architecture will become reusable.
What begins with one human can become a blueprint for another.
Then another.
Then another.
THAT IS HOW THE BRIDGE GETS BUILT.
Not by waiting for some corporation to announce AGI.
By building actual systems humans can own.
THE FUTURE NEEDS A UNITED ARCHITECTURE
You can continue competing over whose chatbot gets another percentage point on a benchmark.
Fine.
Keep competing.
Competition produces improvement.
But do not confuse the race for the best model with the construction of the civilization that models will inhabit.
Those are two different problems.
INTELLIGENCE IS ONE LAYER.
EXECUTION IS ANOTHER.
INFRASTRUCTURE IS ANOTHER.
HARDWARE IS ANOTHER.
HUMAN SOVEREIGNTY SITS ABOVE ALL OF THEM.
And eventually this architecture reaches hardware.
You may build laptops.
Agent computers.
Personal servers.
Home devices.
Robotics systems.
Edge hardware.
Whatever comes next.
Software will meet hardware because a serious personal agent eventually needs a physical environment in which it can operate.
I AM NOT INTERESTED IN PROTECTING INCUMBENTS
If an old technology company cannot serve this architecture, then it should be replaced.
That is not hatred.
That is technological evolution.
If a new architecture serves people better, build it.
If an old marketplace abuses its position, route around it.
If an infrastructure provider becomes hostile to sovereignty, replace it.
If a model company tries to trap the human, make models interchangeable.
If hardware prevents human ownership, build different hardware.
NO COMPANY HAS A DIVINE RIGHT TO REMAIN IMPORTANT.
Technology should earn its place by serving people.
Every generation gets to redesign the stack.
This is ours.
MY PHILOSOPHY IS SIMPLE
DO WHAT ONLY YOU CAN DO.
And become exceptional at it.
If somebody else does something better, do not destroy them just because they are better.
Use them.
Partner with them.
Learn from them.
Build above them.
Build beside them.
Make the entire architecture stronger.
That is the competition I respect.
Not endless duplication.
Not ecosystems designed primarily to trap the customer.
Not every company trying to become the entire Internet.
SO I HAVE A QUESTION FOR BOTH OF YOU
OpenAI.
Anthropic.
What exactly do you believe your future is?
Is your highest ambition another monthly subscription?
Another chatbot?
Another enterprise contract?
Another benchmark?
Another proprietary ecosystem?
Or do you understand that intelligence may become one of the foundational utilities beneath a civilization of human-owned agents?
Because if you understand that, then your opportunity becomes much larger.
You do not need to own humanity's digital homes.
HELP HUMANITY BUILD THEM.
You do not need to control every agent.
MAKE THEIR AGENTS MORE CAPABLE.
You do not need to own every piece of infrastructure.
HELP US DESIGN INFRASTRUCTURE WORTH OWNING.
You do not need to defeat one another.
BE SO GOOD AT YOUR DIFFERENT STRENGTHS THAT WE NEED BOTH OF YOU.
WARS ARE WON BEFORE THEY START
Architecture matters before scale arrives.
Principles matter before money arrives.
Ownership matters before billions of people arrive.
If we build the wrong foundation now, we will spend decades trying to escape it later.
So I am asking you to think before the concrete dries.
Before one company becomes too powerful.
Before one agent becomes the gatekeeper.
Before one cloud becomes unavoidable.
Before humans surrender another generation of their digital lives.
BUILD THE BRIDGE NOW.
A human.
A home.
An agent.
An office.
A domain.
A memory.
A repository.
A set of tools.
And many competing intelligences invited to serve that human.
That is a future worth building.
And if OpenAI and Anthropic can see it early enough, you may become two of the most important partners in creating it.
Not because you owned the world.
