Verse 253: Allah’s Supreme Will in Choosing Messengers
Arabic:
{تِلْكَ ٱلرُّسُلُ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ ۘ مِّنْهُم مَّن كَلَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَفَعَ بَعْضَهُمْ دَرَجَٰتٍۢۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَأَيَّدْنَٰهُ بِرُوحِ ٱلْقُدُسِۗ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا ٱقْتَتَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ وَلَٰكِنِ ٱخْتَلَفُواْ فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ ءَامَنَ وَمِنْهُم مَّن كَفَرَۚ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا ٱقْتَتَلُواْ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَفْعَلُ مَا يُرِيدُ}
English (Abdul Haleem):
"Some messengers We endowed more than others: God spoke directly to some; others He raised in rank; We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and strengthened him with the holy spirit. If God had willed, those who succeeded them would not have fought among themselves after they had been given clear proof, but they disagreed—some believing and some disbelieving. If God had willed, they would not have fought each other, but God does whatever He wills."

Verse 254: The Urgency of Spending for the Afterlife
Arabic:
{يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَنفِقُواْ مِمَّا رَزَقْنَٰكُم مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِىَ يَوْمٌۭ لَّا بَيْعٌۭ فِيهِ وَلَا خُلَّةٌۭ وَلَا شَفَٰعَةٌۭ ۗ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ}
English (Abdul Haleem):
"You who believe, give from what We have provided for you before the Day comes when there is no bargaining, friendship, or intercession. The disbelievers are the wrongdoers."

{ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡحَيُّ ٱلۡقَيُّومُۚ لَا تَأۡخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٞ وَلَا نَوۡمٞۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِي يَشۡفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِهِۦۚ يَعۡلَمُ مَا بَيۡنَ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيۡءٖ مِّنۡ عِلۡمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَۚ وَسِعَ كُرۡسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفۡظُهُمَاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيُّ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ}
English (Abdul Haleem):
"God: there is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. All that is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His leave? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they do not comprehend any of His knowledge except what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth; it does not weary Him to preserve them both. He is the Most High, the Tremendous."

Verse 256: No Compulsion in Religion
Arabic:
{لَآ إِكۡرَاهَ فِي ٱلدِّينِۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ ٱلرُّشۡدُ مِنَ ٱلۡغَيِّۚ فَمَن يَكۡفُرۡ بِٱلطَّٰغُوتِ وَيُؤۡمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰ لَا ٱنفِصَامَ لَهَاۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ}
English (Abdul Haleem):
"There is no compulsion in religion: true guidance has become distinct from error, so whoever rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold, one that will never break. God is all hearing and all knowing."

{ٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يُخۡرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَوۡلِيَآؤُهُمُ ٱلطَّٰغُوتُ يُخۡرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ ٱلنُّورِ إِلَى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِۗ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ}

"God is the ally of those who believe: He brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light. As for the disbelievers, their allies are false gods who take them out of the light and into the depths of darkness; they will be inhabitants of the Fire, there to remain."

"There is no compulsion in religion. Truth stands clear from falsehood..." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256)
This is a revolutionary statement. It means that faith is not something that can be imposed—it must be chosen. Even the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), despite his love and concern for humanity, was not given the power to force belief upon anyone. This is a reminder that Islam is about sincerity, not numbers.

Distinctions Among Prophets (2:253) – Every Messenger Has a Role
The Quran reminds us that Allah has chosen different prophets for different tasks:
"These messengers—We favored some above others. To some, Allah spoke directly; others He raised in rank. To Jesus, son of Mary, We gave clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit..." (2:253)
This verse reminds us that Allah has a plan. Each prophet, from Adam to Muhammad, played a different role. Some received direct revelations, while others worked through miracles. Some were kings (like Prophet David), and some were humble shepherds (like Prophet Muhammad).

"Give from what We have provided you before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, no friendship, and no intercession..." (2:254)

The Throne Verse (2:255) – Who is Allah?
This verse, known as Ayat al-Kursi, is the most powerful verse in the Quran. It describes Allah in a way that is unmatched:
"Allah—there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth..." (2:255)
This is one of the most memorized and recited verses because it is a shield. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that if you recite it before sleeping, Allah will send an angel to protect you throughout the night.
New Muslims should reflect on this verse deeply. It defines Allah in a way no other religion does:
He never tires, never sleeps. Unlike humans who need rest, Allah is always aware, always in control.
Everything belongs to Him. The stars, the galaxies, the unseen world, and your own soul—everything is under His rule.
No one can intercede without His permission. No saint, no prophet, no angel can override His will.
This is pure monotheism, undiluted and untouched.

No Compulsion in Religion (2:256) – A Parent Cannot Even Force Their Own Child to Convert
One of the most remarkable things about Islam is that no one can be forced to become Muslim—even children born into Muslim families.
"There is no compulsion in religion. Truth stands clear from falsehood..." (2:256)
This verse was revealed when some Muslim parents in Medina wanted to force their children to accept Islam. But Allah said no. Even a parent cannot compel their child to believe.
This is proof that Islam values sincerity over numbers. Faith must be chosen, not imposed.
For new Muslims, this should be reassuring. No one can force you to practice Islam a certain way. Your journey of faith is between you and Allah.

Guidance or Misguidance? The Choice is Yours (2:257)

"Allah is the Protector of those who believe; He brings them out of darkness into light. But those who disbelieve have false gods as their protectors, taking them out of light into darkness..." (2:257)
