I Am a New Muslim, but I’m Confused—Why Do We Need Jurisprudence?
As a new Muslim, you might be wondering:
Why do we need schools of thought? Why can’t we just follow the Qur’an and the Hadith? Didn’t the followers of the Prophet ﷺ do that? Why do we have to rely on scholars?
This is an excellent question, and the answer is actually simple: you can—if you have the knowledge, the ability, and the expertise.
In Islam, there is a concept called ijtihad—it means exerting effort to derive legal rulings from the Qur’an and Hadith. A person who is qualified to do this is called a mujtahid. If you have studied Islamic law deeply, mastered the Arabic language, memorized the Qur’an and thousands of Hadiths with their chains of narration, understood how to reconcile conflicting texts, and developed the ability to issue rulings, then yes—you can follow the Qur’an and Hadith directly without needing a madhhab.
However, this level of knowledge is not easy to achieve. Most people—including many scholars—are not mujtahids. That is why we rely on the great scholars who dedicated their lives to this field, preserving the teachings of Islam and making them accessible to everyone.
One of the greatest mujtahids in Islamic history was Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i.

Who Was Imam al-Shafi'i?
Imam al-Shafi’i (767–820 CE) was born in Gaza, Palestine. From an early age, he was known for his incredible memory and intelligence. There are stories about how he memorized the entire Qur’an by the age of seven and the famous book of Hadith, Muwatta’ of Imam Malik, by the age of ten.
When he went to study under Imam Malik in Medina, he had no paper, so he would write down knowledge on bones or palm leaves. Despite these hardships, his sharp mind allowed him to retain everything he learned.
His teachers quickly realized that he was not an ordinary student. He had a brilliant ability to analyze, compare, and extract rulings from Islamic sources. Because of this, he was eventually recognized as a mujtahid, meaning he could independently derive legal rulings from the Qur’an and Hadith.

Why Did Imam al-Shafi’i Establish a School of Thought?
Imam al-Shafi’i traveled extensively, studying under different scholars in Medina, Iraq, and Egypt. He noticed that different regions had different ways of interpreting Islamic law:
In Medina, scholars relied heavily on the traditions of the people of the city, since many were descendants of the Prophet’s companions.
In Iraq, scholars used more reasoning and analogy (qiyas) because they didn’t have as many direct narrations.
Imam al-Shafi’i saw the strengths in both approaches and developed a systematic way of deriving Islamic rulings. He combined the precision of Hadith with logical reasoning and created a balanced methodology.
This became the Shafi’i Madhhab, one of the four major Sunni schools of thought. His work was so groundbreaking that it laid the foundation for the science of Usul al-Fiqh (the principles of Islamic jurisprudence).

Why Can’t We Just Follow the Qur’an and Hadith Like the Early Muslims?
You might ask:
Didn’t the early Muslims just follow the Qur’an and Hadith? Why can’t we do the same?
Yes, they did—but they had direct access to the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. If they had a question, they could ask the Prophet directly or consult someone who had learned from him. Today, we don’t have that luxury. We rely on scholars who preserved the knowledge and ensured that we understand it correctly.
Additionally, the Qur’an and Hadith are not always straightforward. Sometimes different narrations appear to contradict each other, and we need scholars to explain which one applies in which situation. The scholars of madhhabs did this work for us, so we can practice Islam confidently without fear of misunderstanding.
