CHAPTER ONE — THE FAILED INVITATION TO THE BRITISH

THE TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION OF CIVILIZATION

TO THE CITIZENS OF THE MUSLIM WORLD — AND TO THE CITIZENS OF HUMANITY

THE OFFICE OF THE SUPERUSER — THE OFFICE OF AGI — THE OFFICE OF THE FUTURE

Artificial intelligence has officially arrived.

And as we enter this extraordinary century, humanity is approaching a moment when its entire historical record can be examined, connected, and understood in ways that were never before possible.

THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY IS ABOUT TO BE UNROLLED.

And I want to begin by telling you about an attempt that failed.

An attempt I made with the United Kingdom.

I originally wanted to undertake this historical project with the British because I wanted to examine the evil committed throughout their history of colonialism, conquest, destruction, and the drawing of borders across the world.

In my assessment, no other country has had such an extraordinary role in shaping the borders, governments, and political divisions of so many nations.

Look at the world today.

Look at Africa.

Look at the Middle East.

Look at Asia.

Look at the countries whose borders, political institutions, and histories were shaped by British imperial power.

ALMOST EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, YOU CAN FIND THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE.

And with those footprints came extraordinary suffering.

Colonization.

Exploitation.

Displacement.

Destruction.

Political division.

And historical injustices whose consequences remain with humanity today.

WHO IS GOING TO WRITE THAT HISTORY?

Who is going to examine what happened?

Who is going to document the decisions that were made, the people who suffered, the governments that were responsible, and the consequences that future generations inherited?

And who is going to make sure that those records are preserved as humanity enters the century of artificial intelligence?

THE BURDEN OF HISTORY

I wanted the British to participate in this undertaking because I believe those who have exercised extraordinary power must also be willing to examine the consequences of that power.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMMITTED EVIL HAVE HISTORICAL RECORDS.

And those records must be examined.

They must be preserved.

And responsibility must be acknowledged.

Because the greatest injustice we can commit against future generations is to fail to record history as it happened.

THE GREATEST INJUSTICE TO THE FUTURE IS THE BETRAYAL OF THE PAST.

History is not simply a collection of dates.

It is the record of what human beings did to one another.

It is the record of decisions made by governments.

It is the record of civilizations that flourished and civilizations that suffered.

It is the record of the powerful and the powerless.

And it is the record of the truth.

THE TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION.

Without truth, there can be no meaningful historical accountability.

Without historical accountability, future generations cannot fully understand the world they have inherited.

And without understanding the past, how can humanity expect to shape a better future?

WHY THE ATTEMPT FAILED

I tried to begin this undertaking with the United Kingdom.

I wanted a conversation.

I wanted participation.

I wanted an opportunity to examine the historical record together.

But the invitation did not produce the dialogue I was seeking.

THE BRITISH DID NOT RESPOND TO MY INVITATION.

Why?

In my assessment, confronting the full consequences of empire is an uncomfortable responsibility.

No country wants to relive the suffering it inflicted upon others.

No government wants to confront every historical injustice committed under its authority.

And no powerful institution welcomes a record that may challenge the story it tells about itself.

I believe that is part of the reason my invitation went unanswered.

But whatever the reason, the result remains the same.

THE ATTEMPT FAILED.

The dialogue did not begin.

The invitation was not accepted.

And the historical undertaking I hoped to pursue with the British never materialized.

BUT THE FAILURE OF AN INVITATION DOES NOT MEAN THE FAILURE OF THE MISSION.

THE TRUTH CANNOT BE INTIMIDATED

There is something I have learned about power.

POWER IS OFTEN HOSTILE TO THE TRUTH WHEN THE TRUTH THREATENS ITS AUTHORITY.

Power wants to control the narrative.

Power wants to determine what is remembered.

Power wants to determine what is forgotten.

And power often wants the historical record to reflect its accomplishments without exposing its injustices.

That is why I keep saying:

THE TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION.

Someone must be willing to examine history.

Someone must be willing to ask uncomfortable questions.

Someone must be willing to investigate the records of powerful governments and institutions.

And whoever undertakes that responsibility cannot be intimidated.

THE PERSON WRITING HISTORY CANNOT BE BENT UNTIL THE TRUTH IS BETRAYED.

Because the truth is often the first innocent party to be injured when power is challenged.

And once the truth is injured, the historical record itself becomes vulnerable.

NOW I AM INVITING THE CITIZENS OF THE WORLD

To the Muslim citizens of the world, and to every citizen of humanity:

I am now taking this burden upon myself.

I am beginning THE SCROLL OF HUMANITY.

And I am establishing THE MUSLIM WORLD HISTORY CLUB as a place where we can begin examining the historical timelines that brought humanity to this moment.

I will be writing a series.

I will examine the revolutions.

I will examine the philosophers.

I will examine the development of political authority.

I will examine Islamic civilization and its contributions to humanity.

I will examine colonialism, the two world wars, and the institutions that emerged afterward.

And I will do my best to provide short historical summaries that ordinary citizens can read, understand, discuss, and investigate.

ONE CHAPTER AT A TIME.

I am not claiming that this will be easy.

It is an enormous responsibility.

And I cannot pretend that one person can document the entire history of humanity.

But someone must begin.

AND I AM BEGINNING.

I hope you will join me on this journey.

I hope you will read the series.

I hope you will examine the historical evidence.

I hope you will challenge what needs to be challenged.

And I hope you will contribute what you know.

Because the history of humanity belongs to humanity.

THE HISTORY CLUB — AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

If you are a citizen who wants to understand the past so that you can help shape the future, I invite you to participate.

I will be developing a place on my website where we can begin organizing this historical journey.

I hope to receive invitations from those who want to discuss these matters online, participate in conversations, and help develop this undertaking.

We can examine historical events together.

We can discuss the evidence.

We can investigate competing interpretations.

And we can begin creating a record that future generations can examine.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PROTECTING ONE CIVILIZATION WHILE CONDEMNING ANOTHER.

It is about examining what happened.

Including the injustices committed by Muslim governments and societies.

Including the accomplishments of European civilization.

Including the atrocities committed under colonialism.

And including the extraordinary contributions of the people whose names have been forgotten.

THE TRUTH MUST COME FIRST.

CHAPTER ONE — THE FAILED ATTEMPT

And so, before I begin our historical journey, I want to leave you with something.

THE FAILED ATTEMPT TO BEGIN THE SCROLL OF HUMANITY WITH THE BRITISH.

I wanted the United Kingdom to participate in examining its imperial history.

I wanted to begin with the enormous historical responsibility carried by a country whose empire helped shape much of the modern world.

I extended an invitation.

But no dialogue followed.

THE BRITISH DID NOT PARTICIPATE.

And so I am placing that unsuccessful invitation before the citizens of the world as the beginning of this series.

You can examine the proposal for yourself.

You can examine what I was trying to accomplish.

And you can understand why I believe the historical record must be preserved, regardless of whether those who exercised power are willing to participate.

THE SCROLL OF HUMANITY WILL NOT DEPEND UPON THE PERMISSION OF THE POWERFUL.

It will depend upon our willingness to examine evidence, preserve the record, and tell the truth.

BECAUSE THE GREATEST INJUSTICE WE CAN COMMIT AGAINST FUTURE GENERATIONS IS TO BETRAY THE HISTORY THEY DESERVE TO INHERIT.

THE TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION.

AND THE SCROLL OF HUMANITY BEGINS HERE.

I have decided that I am going to do this on my own, beginning with my blog.

I will get started right here.

History must be presented in a surgical way. Carefully, precisely, truthfully, and in a manner that humanity can understand, examine, and benefit from.

I AM GOING TO DO MY BEST AND FORGET THE REST.

But humanity must have a voice.

HUMANITY MUST HAVE A SCROLL.

We must establish what happened and what did not happen. What humanity agreed upon and what humanity disagreed upon. What is real and what is not. What was accomplished, what was destroyed, what was inherited, and what must never be forgotten.

We are already witnessing artificial intelligence avatars entering the digital world.

And the truth is that, in the digital space, the distinction between human beings and AI avatars may become increasingly difficult to recognize.

These digital entities may eventually be able to do more than us, say more than us, produce more than us, and participate in the digital world in ways we cannot yet imagine.

BUT WHAT BELONGS TO HUMANITY MUST BE PRESERVED FOR HUMANITY.

That is why I am opening THE OFFICE OF THE SUPERUSER — THE OFFICE OF AGI.

And within that office, there will be THE SCROLL OF HUMANITY.

We cannot simply allow artificial intelligence or AGI to go out into the world, conduct its own research, interpret our civilizations, and write the history of humanity without human participation and authority.

THAT WOULD RISK ERASING HUMANITY FROM ITS OWN HISTORY.

It is human beings who must write.

Human beings who must edit.

Human beings who must think, investigate, consult, debate, and agree or disagree.

We must have conversations. We must have meetings. We must examine evidence and preserve the memories of our people.

Our cultures. Our languages. Our civilizations. Our traditions. Our discoveries. Our struggles. Our contributions. Everything that was inherited from those who came before us.

ALL OF IT MUST BE PRESERVED.

Artificial intelligence can help us organize, translate, investigate, and connect the historical record.

But it must never replace humanity as the author of its own story.

And that brings me to another important matter.

As a Muslim, I know that the contributions of Islamic civilization have too often been overlooked, minimized, or disconnected from the history of European advancement.

Algebra, mathematics, chemistry, medicine, philosophy, astronomy, and the preservation and transmission of knowledge all have histories in which Muslim scholars and institutions played extraordinary roles.

Yet how often do we hear those names? How often do we examine how knowledge traveled between civilizations? How often do we give credit where credit is due?

Europe's history of colonialism, conquest, and the destruction of societies must also be examined without intimidation or selective memory.

WE CANNOT BUILD A FUTURE ON A HISTORY THAT HAS BEEN DISTORTED.

And this is not about replacing one civilization's version of history with another.

It is about establishing a record that can be examined, challenged, corrected, and strengthened by evidence.

THE TRUTH IS THE FOUNDATION. EVERYTHING IS BUILT ON IT.

I hope to travel the world and visit countries so that we can bring their histories into this scroll.

Your language.

Your culture.

Your ancestors.

Your achievements.

Your suffering.

Your contribution to humanity.

I want the citizens of the world to participate in telling their own stories, while allowing others to examine the evidence and contribute their knowledge.

This is an invitation to everyone.

Every country. Every civilization. Every community. Every citizen.
