The Journey Begins With You: Your Flight to the Heavens Awaits
Did you know that the journey to the heavens is not just a story of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)? It is your story too. When you die, you will ascend to your Lord, for the angels who brought you into this world will also take you out. They placed you in your mother’s womb with precision, and they will be waiting to carry your soul to its eternal destination. Whether you accept it or not, this space jump is your future—your reality.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
"It is He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed." (Surah Al-Mulk, 67:2)
And the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"When the believer’s soul is taken, it is met by angels as radiant as the sun, carrying shrouds of Paradise, and they ascend with it, saying, ‘What a good soul!’"
But not all journeys are the same. For the wicked, the earth will not cry for them. Allah states:
"Neither the heaven nor the earth wept for them, nor were they granted respite." (Surah Ad-Dukhan, 44:29)
Imagine your soul being taken and carried through the heavens—either welcomed with light, beauty, and fragrance or rejected, foul-smelling, and shunned by the angels. The earth will spit you out; the heavens will close their gates to you.
Will your journey be one of honor or one of disgrace? Will you ascend with glory, flying with the wings of righteousness, or will you fall, heavy with sin, rejected and despised?
This is your journey. This is your truth. The best of you will prepare for this moment, for when the angels come, there is no escape. Let us take you through the night of Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was shown the ultimate reality of this journey. Let it serve as a guide and a warning.
Get ready, for this is the journey you cannot avoid. Your soul will ascend—either with honor or in rejection. The choice begins now.
Congratulations! You have received an invitation to a journey that every soul will undertake—the journey beyond this earthly life. While we often perceive death as an end, in reality, it is the ultimate freedom for the soul, a transition from the confines of the physical body to the vast expanses of the hereafter.
The Nightly Voyage of the Soul
Did you know that each night, as you sleep, your soul embarks on a journey? The Qur'an states:
> "It is Allah who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep. He keeps those for which He has ordained death and releases the others for a specified term." (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:42)
This verse illustrates that during sleep, our souls temporarily leave our bodies, experiencing a state akin to death. If Allah wills, He returns the soul upon waking; if not, the soul remains in the hereafter. This nightly departure is a reminder of the eventual, permanent journey we will all face.
The Moment of Departure
At the time of death, the Angel of Death arrives to retrieve the soul. The experience of this moment varies based on one's faith and deeds:
For the Righteous: The soul is gently extracted, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described, "The soul of the believer comes out as a drop of water from a water skin." It is then wrapped in a shroud of fragrance and ascends through the heavens, greeted by angels at each level, until it reaches the Divine Presence. After being honored, the soul is returned to the body in the grave, where it will undergo questioning by the angels Munkar and Nakir.
For the Wicked: The extraction is harsh, likened to "a skewer passing through wet wool, tearing the veins and nerves." The soul is wrapped in a foul-smelling shroud and is denied entry through the heavens, ultimately being cast down. It too is returned to the body for questioning, but the outcomes are dire.
The Reality of the Grave
Once returned to the body, the soul faces the trial of the grave. The righteous will find their grave spacious and filled with light, a window to paradise opened for them. Conversely, the wicked will experience darkness, constriction, and a window to the torments of hell.
A Glimpse into the Afterlife
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was granted a journey through the heavens during the event of Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj. He witnessed the realms of paradise and hell, providing vivid descriptions as a warning and a reminder. This journey serves as a testament to the realities that await each soul.
Prepare for Your Journey
Reflect upon your nightly slumber as a microcosm of death—a time when your soul departs and returns. Use this understanding to prepare for the inevitable journey. Strive for righteousness, seek forgiveness, and live a life that ensures your soul's transition is one of peace and honor.
Remember, this journey is not a choice but a certainty. Embrace it with awareness and preparation, so that when the time comes, your soul eagerly meets its Lord, ready for the eternal abode of bliss.
