The Ever-Smiling Light: The Emotions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always smiling.

It is said that there was not a moment when his companions locked eyes with him except that they saw him smiling at them. His face radiated kindness, his words carried warmth, and his character illuminated hearts. Even those who did not follow him—those who had not yet accepted his message—found themselves drawn to him. There was something beyond words in his presence, something indescribable yet deeply felt.

It was more than a smile; it was light itself.

"Indeed, there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; he is concerned over you and to the believers he is kind and merciful."

(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:128)

He was not a man of harshness. His was a presence that soothed the heart, that made others feel seen, valued, and loved. Even in the face of hardship, he smiled. Even when he had nothing to give, he gave hope. His was a mercy that transcended words, that was felt in every glance, in every gentle reply, in every touch of his blessed hands.

The Smile of the Messenger ﷺ: A Legacy to Carry

For those who claim to represent him—be it scholars, preachers, or leaders—understand what you are carrying. You are carrying the legacy of the most smiling human being to ever walk the earth.

How is it, then, that some who stand in pulpits, who wear the clothing of scholars, who claim to spread his message, do so with frowns upon their faces? How is it that they bring severity instead of gentleness, harshness instead of warmth? They have received knowledge, but it has not illuminated them.

"Verily, Allah sent me as a mercy and not as a tormentor."

(Sahih Muslim, 2599)

The Prophet ﷺ was not emotionless, nor was he distant. He was not a cold or intimidating figure. He welcomed people into his space. He listened. He cared. He uplifted. He was both the bravest warrior and the gentlest soul.

To those who say, “This is how the Prophet was—stern, tough, commanding”—you have not understood him. He was a balance of a mother’s mercy and a father’s strength.

When he conquered the brave, he was the kindest to them.

When he led armies, he did not become ruthless.

When he had power, he remained humble.

He did not rebuke the weak. He did not look down upon sinners. His presence made women feel safe, children feel seen, and the poor feel dignified.

"And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds."

(Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:107)

The Prophet’s Generosity: A Bank of Mercy

Imagine living at his time, walking into his blessed presence, and knowing that you would not be turned away.

If you were poor, he would give you wealth.

If you were lost, he would guide you.

If you were lonely, he would be your friend.

At the height of his power, when he had settled in Medina as a leader, women would still come to him and take him by the hand, leading him through the markets as if he were just another man—because he was approachable, kind, gentle, real.

"The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings the most benefit to others, and the most beloved of deeds to Allah is to make a Muslim happy, to relieve him of hardship, to pay off his debt, or to expel his hunger."

(Tabarani, Hasan)

His wealth came and went like the tides.

In the morning, he could be the wealthiest man in Medina, but by night, every coin, every grain of food, every piece of cloth had been given away. He lived like a banker of mercy—distributing, investing, and ensuring that people flourished.

Even when he had nothing material to give, he would not turn people away empty-handed. He would say, “Allah will provide for you, and He will provide for me.”

The Prophet’s Shyness: More Bashful Than a Bride

We hear of warriors who show no fear, of leaders who command with power, of men who are unwavering in their resolve. But have you heard of a man braver than all of them, yet more shy than a newlywed bride?

"The Prophet ﷺ was more bashful than a virgin in her veil, and when he disliked something, we could see it on his face."

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6119)

What kind of heart did he have?

What kind of beauty did he carry in his soul that even his shyness was mesmerizing?

To meet him was to meet the purest of all creation. His face shone like the moon, his eyes carried kindness, his lips carried wisdom, his heart carried all of us.

"By Allah, I have not seen anyone who smiled more than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

(Tirmidhi, 3641)

Where Are the Beautiful Muslims?

Today, people complain about Islam, about its portrayal, about how it is misunderstood. But where are the beautiful Muslims?

Where are the ones who carry the elegance, the kindness, the generosity of the Prophet ﷺ?

Where are those who, despite their flaws, strive to be like him—not in outward appearance alone, but in character, in warmth, in the love they share?

This is not just about non-Muslims misunderstanding Islam. Even within the Muslim world, people have not yet seen the full beauty of the message. They have not met the Muslim who embodies the teachings of the most perfect Prophet ﷺ.

Because if they had, their hearts would melt.

This is not about perfection. No one can be him.

But who is trying to be like him?

Who is not afraid to be vulnerable, to be loving, to be the kind of person who makes others feel seen, feel safe, feel uplifted?

The Quest for Love

My quest is simple:

To bring beauty back into Islam.

To let this religion be associated with elegance, with kindness, with mercy.

To embody love, to spread light, to live in a way that makes people feel honored in my presence.

I want people to look at me and see Islam—not as a set of rules, not as something harsh or distant, but as something warm, something beautiful, something that makes them feel safe.

Because that is what the Prophet ﷺ was.

I have defects. I have flaws. But at the end of the day, I will do my best to represent the best of all creation.

And tonight, as the angels descend, as the unseen world shifts, I find myself closer to love than ever before.

I am looking at it.

I am observing it.

I am understanding it.

And I am grateful.
