The Balance of Love: Between Motherly Mercy and Fatherly Strength

What is a father’s love?

It is the love of courage, the love of toughness, the love of discipline. It is the battlefield, the place where bravery is forged, where retreat is not an option. It is a love harder than stone, a force that shapes character, a force that refuses to be swayed by tears. It stands in contrast to the softness of a mother’s love, and yet, between these two forces, balance is found.

A mother’s love is the love of endless giving, of immediate comfort, of unwavering patience. It is a love that nurtures, a love that does not question, a love that shields. It is the first love we know, the first embrace we trust, the first kindness we experience. But innocence cannot last forever. A child, once pure and in need, begins to change. They grow, they desire, they test, they rebel. And when innocence fades, a different love must take its place.

The father’s love now becomes essential.

Like sunlight, it enforces order. It is not there to indulge, not there to soothe every wound. It is there to teach, to set limits, to prepare the soul for a world that will not be gentle. A father’s love is not meant for endless crying; it does not bow to pleading eyes. It delivers pride, glory, and the right to stand with dignity.

"Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing."

(Surah An-Nisa, 4:58)

With the mother, you learn what it means to give completely, to always be present. A single expression of sadness can shatter her resistance. She will feed, she will make excuses, she will justify, because love demands it of her. And within this, there is a hidden reflection of Divine love—the mercy of Allah manifest in the patience of a mother.

But a father’s love reflects something else.

Bravery. Toughness. Honor.

Pride and glory are on display.

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true."

(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:119)

Don’t lie. Don’t cheat. Keep your promises. Walk the lonely road with your head held high. Do not complain. Suck it up.

These are lessons that a mother’s love cannot teach. Because the world is not kind, and people carry their own agendas. Some embrace evil, some engage in injustice, some will test you with deception and betrayal. In such a world, love alone is not enough. Justice must stand beside it.

Even worse, some must bear the weight of sacrifice.

"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient."

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155)

The path to Allah’s door is not paved with ease. It is a door that only opens through humility. Some must be the grinding stone, cut into pieces like confetti and scattered into the wind. Some must endure suffering, knowing that God is guarded, that the path of truth requires both love and hardship.

The Prophet ﷺ: The Ultimate Balance

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the perfect embodiment of these emotions—softness beyond a mother’s love, yet firmness beyond a warrior’s might.

Some said he was more loving than a mother. His shyness, his beauty, his elegant words, his heart overflowing with mercy—how do you describe such a man to those who only know the harshness of life?

"And indeed, you are of a great moral character."

(Surah Al-Qalam, 68:4)

He was neither weak nor harsh. He carried gentleness in one hand and strength in the other. He was a guide, a teacher, a commander, and a father to his people.

But even in love, there is a limit.

When dealing with the believers, the Prophet ﷺ embodied mercy, patience, and kindness. But to those who received the message, understood it, and rejected it with arrogance, Allah commanded a different approach:

"O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination."

(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:73)

There is no obligation to smile at those who reject truth. There is no need to waste kindness on those who mock guidance. Love is not meant to be given to those who spit upon it.

And I have seen this in my own life.

A family member once smiled at me, expecting warmth in return. I told him, “Do not smile at me. If you cannot take a few minutes to discuss our relationship with Allah, then you do not deserve my warmth.”

Smiles are not for those who ignore the truth. Love is not for those who reject responsibility. To give it freely, without accountability, is to sell something sacred for nothing.

This is the father’s love.

It is not about high-fives and pretense. It is about standing firm, setting the standard, refusing to compromise on what is right. It is about protecting love from being taken advantage of.

Love in a World of Cowards

We live in a time where people hide behind screens, afraid to be vulnerable. On X, they fear falling in love in public, as if it is a weakness to be seen caring. True courage is to show your emotions without fear. True bravery is to let the world witness your love, your passion, your devotion.

I look forward to sharing my smiles, my emotions, my happiness—for the sake of Allah.

Especially with those new to Islam.

Because there are those searching for love, for loyalty, for the embrace of a brotherhood that stands for something greater than itself. That love has been hijacked, hidden, stolen away. But it still exists.

A Muslim will die for a stranger. A Muslim will protect the weak. A Muslim will not allow injustice in their presence.

That is why in the Islamic world, you will never see one person being attacked by ten. It does not happen. It cannot happen. A believer will not allow such cowardice to exist around them.

"Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah' and then remained steadfast—the angels will descend upon them, saying, 'Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.'"

(Surah Fussilat, 41:30)

This is the love of Islam.

A love that brings safety. A love that brings peace. A love that restores the balance of mercy and justice in the world.

And through this, I have come back to love itself.

I am watching love communicate.

I am watching love dictate.

I am watching love connect.
