8. Upholding Purity in Worship and Prayer (4:43)
Arabic:
{ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَـٰرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا۟ مَا تَقُولُونَ وَلَا جُنُبًۭا إِلَّا عَابِرِى سَبِيلٍۢ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا۟ ۚ وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰٓ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَآءَ أَحَدٌۭ مِّنكُم مِّنَ ٱلْغَآئِطِ أَوْ لَـٰمَسْتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا۟ مَآءًۭ فَتَيَمَّمُوا۟ صَعِيدًۭا طَيِّبًۭا فَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّۭا غَفُورًۭا }
Translation:
"O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying, nor in a state of impurity—except when traveling—until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey, or one of you comes from relieving himself, or you have been in contact with women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving." (Surah An-Nisa 4:43)
🔹 Key Insights:
Worship requires presence of mind—prayer must be performed with full consciousness and awareness.
Ritual purity (Wudu/Ghusl) is essential for prayer, yet Islam provides ease (Tayammum) when water is unavailable.

{ ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ يُحَرِّفُونَ ٱلْكَلِمَ عَن مَّوَاضِعِهِۦ وَيَقُولُونَ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَٱسْمَعْ غَيْرَ مُسْمَعٍۢ وَرَٰعِنَا لَيًّۢا بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ وَطَعْنًۭا فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۚ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَٱسْمَعْ وَٱنظُرْنَا لَكَانَ خَيْرًۭا لَّهُمْ وَأَقْوَمَ وَلَـٰكِن لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا }
Translation:
"Among the Jews are those who distort words from their proper places and say, ‘We hear and disobey’ and ‘Hear but be not heard’ and ‘Rā‘inā,’ twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], ‘We hear and obey’ and ‘Listen’ and ‘Look at us with respect,’ it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not except for a few." (Surah An-Nisa 4:46)
🔹 Key Insights:
Misrepresentation of divine guidance is condemned.
True faith requires sincerity, not manipulation of words for self-interest.

Translation:
"Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin." (Surah An-Nisa 4:48)
🔹 Key Insights:
Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the gravest sin, but Allah forgives everything else.
The door of repentance is always open for those who seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Surah An-Nisa (4:42-50) – Commentary, Historical Context, and Reasons for Revelation
Now, let’s dive deeper into these verses by exploring the historical background, reasons for revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul), and their broader meanings.
---
1. The Hypocrites and Their Deception (4:42)
Historical Context & Reason for Revelation:
This verse refers to the Day of Judgment, when those who rejected Islam and disobeyed the Prophet (ﷺ) will wish they could disappear into the earth out of shame and regret.
During the Prophet’s time, the hypocrites (munafiqun)—those who outwardly claimed to be Muslim but secretly opposed Islam—often disobeyed his commands and mocked the faith. This verse warns them that their deception will be exposed.
🔹 Lesson for New Muslims:
No one can hide from Allah’s judgment; sincerity in faith is key.
Even if hypocrisy remains hidden in this world, it will be exposed in the Hereafter.
---
2. Prohibition of Intoxication in Prayer (4:43)
Historical Context & Reason for Revelation:
This verse was revealed before alcohol was completely forbidden in Islam. Early Muslims, many of whom had been accustomed to drinking before Islam, were told not to approach prayer in a state of intoxication.
🔹 Stages of Alcohol Prohibition in Islam:
1. Discouragement – Surah Al-Baqarah (2:219) states that alcohol has some benefit but more harm.
2. Restriction in Prayer – Surah An-Nisa (4:43) forbids Muslims from praying while intoxicated.
3. Complete Prohibition – Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:90-91) declares alcohol as "an abomination of Satan’s handiwork" and forbids it entirely.
🔹 Lesson for New Muslims:
Islam gradually transforms society rather than imposing abrupt changes.
Prayer requires full awareness, sincerity, and presence of mind.
If water is unavailable for purification, Tayammum (dry ablution using clean earth) is allowed, showing the ease and flexibility of Islamic law.
---
3. Corruption and Betrayal by Some People of the Book (4:44-45)
Historical Context & Reason for Revelation:
This verse was revealed concerning certain Jewish tribes in Medina, particularly the Banu Qurayza and Banu Nadir. These tribes were given divine scriptures (the Torah) but distorted and misinterpreted them for personal gain.
🔹 Examples of Distortion:
Some Jewish scholars altered religious laws to benefit themselves.
They hid prophecies about the coming of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
They spread misinformation to mislead Muslims.
🔹 Lesson for New Muslims:
Always seek authentic sources when learning about Islam.
Some religious leaders can manipulate teachings for their benefit—this is why the Quran remains unchanged and protected.
---
4. Allah’s Knowledge and Protection (4:46-47)
Historical Context & Reason for Revelation:
This verse was revealed because some Jews in Medina used wordplay to mock the Prophet (ﷺ) and Islam.
🔹 Example of their Wordplay:
Instead of saying سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا (We hear and obey), they would say سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا (We hear and disobey).
They would twist رَاعِنَا (Listen to us) to mean something disrespectful in their language.
🔹 Lesson for New Muslims:
Islam warns against mocking religious beliefs and emphasizes respectful dialogue.
Sincere faith requires good manners, not just correct beliefs.
---
5. The Sin of Shirk and Allah’s Mercy (4:48-50)
Historical Context & Reason for Revelation:
This verse emphasizes that Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the worst sin and will not be forgiven unless a person repents before death.
🔹 Why is Shirk so serious?
It goes against the purpose of creation—Allah created us to worship Him alone.
It leads to moral corruption—people justify injustice when they believe in multiple gods or intercessors with divine power.
It distorts truth—false gods cannot provide guidance, only confusion.
However, Allah is Most Forgiving for all sins except if someone dies in a state of shirk without repenting.
🔹 Lesson for New Muslims:
Even if someone has committed sins, Allah’s mercy is vast—never despair.
True Tawheed (oneness of Allah) is the foundation of Islam.
---
Conclusion: A Well-Rounded Understanding
By studying the historical background, reason for revelation, and meaning of these verses, new Muslims can gain a deeper appreciation of the Quran’s guidance and its practical application in life.
📌 Key Takeaways:
✅ Islamic rulings evolved over time—this shows wisdom and gradual reform.
✅ Sincerity in faith and worship is essential—hypocrisy and mockery will be exposed.
✅ Islam protects divine truth—unlike other scriptures, the Quran is preserved.
✅ Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) is the core of fai
th—avoid anything that contradicts it.
