MATHEMATICS 101
Chapter 1
CHAPTER ONE — HISAB: WHY ALLAH/GOD TAUGHT US TO COUNT
BISMILLAH AL-RAHMAN AL-RAHIM
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
THE HOUSE OF WISDOM — OPENING
This lesson belongs to the House of Wisdom.
A school being rebuilt for a new generation.
A school for Muslims, and for anyone who seeks truth, order, and understanding.
A school where mathematics is not just a subject, but a doorway into civilization itself.
Before we begin, a word for every reader:
When Muslims say “Allah,” we are not speaking about a different deity.
Allah is simply the Arabic word for God —
the Creator of the heavens and the earth,
the One worshipped by Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
Arabic-speaking Christians say Allah.
Arabic-speaking Jews say Allah.
It is the same God — the One, the Eternal, the Source of all measure and truth.
And now, with that clarity, we begin.
WELCOME TO CLASS.
Not a class built by a university.
Not a class built by a government.
Not a class built by a corporation.
Today we begin in the oldest classroom known to humanity:
The Book of Allah/God.
Before algebra.
Before algorithms.
Before computers.
Before artificial intelligence.
Before calculators.
Before the House of Wisdom.
Before all of it — there was Revelation.
And Revelation did something astonishing:
It asked humanity to count.
Most people think mathematics begins with numbers.
They are wrong.
Mathematics begins with a question.
What counts?
What counts in business?
What counts in inheritance?
What counts in justice?
What counts in worship?
What counts in life?
And ultimately:
What counts before Allah/God?
The Qur’an answers all of these questions.
Not accidentally.
Not symbolically.
Not occasionally.
Repeatedly.
The language of calculation is woven throughout the Book.
Allah/God speaks about days.
Allah/God speaks about months.
Allah/God speaks about years.
Allah/God speaks about weights.
Allah/God speaks about measures.
Allah/God speaks about scales.
Allah/God speaks about fractions.
Allah/God speaks about inheritance.
Allah/God speaks about records.
Allah/God speaks about accounting.
And above all:
Allah/God speaks about Hisab.
Hisab means reckoning.
Hisab means calculation.
Hisab means accounting.
Hisab means evaluation.
Hisab means that actions are not lost.
Hisab means that reality keeps a record.
Hisab means that every deed matters.
When Allah/God describes the Day of Judgment, He repeatedly calls it:
Yawm al-Hisab — The Day of Account.
Think about that.
Allah/God could have called it the Day of Emotion.
The Day of Regret.
The Day of Memory.
The Day of Explanation.
Instead He calls it the Day of Account.
The Day when everything is counted.
The Day when nothing disappears.
The Day when every action enters the ledger.
This is not metaphor.
This is mathematics.
The first mathematical civilization in Islam did not begin with equations.
It began with accountability.
It began with justice.
It began with truth.
Before Muslims learned to solve for x, they were taught that every action has a value.
Before Muslims built observatories, they were taught that the sun and moon move according to measure.
Before Muslims built algebra, they were taught that inheritance must be divided precisely.
Before Muslims built libraries, they were taught that every deed is recorded.
Why?
Because civilization cannot exist without accounting.
A family cannot function without accounting.
A business cannot function without accounting.
A government cannot function without accounting.
A court cannot function without accounting.
And a soul cannot stand before its Lord without accounting.
Mathematics is not merely numbers.
Mathematics is order.
Mathematics is proportion.
Mathematics is balance.
Mathematics is justice.
Mathematics is truth expressed precisely.
And that is why Allah/God placed it inside Revelation
long before humanity placed it inside textbooks.
Mathematics is a language.
A language spoken by merchants.
A language spoken by judges.
A language spoken by astronomers.
A language spoken by engineers.
A language spoken by civilizations.
And in many ways, a language spoken by the Qur’an itself.
The House of Wisdom did not appear from nowhere.
Algebra did not appear from nowhere.
The great Muslim mathematicians did not appear from nowhere.
They emerged from a civilization whose Lord taught them to count.
And that is where our journey begins.
Not with a formula.
Not with an equation.
But with a simple realization:
The first lesson in mathematics is understanding that everything counts.
Class is now in session.
THE CONCLUSION
As we close our first lesson, pause for a moment and consider what we have discovered.
Most people are taught that mathematics begins with numbers.
We discovered something different.
Mathematics begins with accountability.
Before there were equations, there was responsibility.
Before there were calculators, there was Hisāb.
Before there were textbooks, there was Revelation.
The first lesson was never about solving for x.
The first lesson was understanding that actions matter, choices matter, and that nothing is truly lost.
Everything counts.
That simple idea changed the world.
It produced scholars.
It produced libraries.
It produced astronomers.
It produced mathematicians.
It produced a civilization that would one day help illuminate the world.
But before any of that could happen, there was a Book.
And that Book constantly returned humanity to a remarkable truth:
The universe is not random.
It is measured.
It is balanced.
It is ordered.
And perhaps that is the greatest invitation contained within the Qur'an.
Not merely to believe.
But to observe.
To think.
To reflect.
To count.

In our next lesson, we move from the idea of mathematics to the evidence itself.
We will open the Qur'an and begin following the trail.
The sun.
The moon.
Time.
Balance.
Measurement.
Inheritance.
Records.
Accounts.
The language of Hisāb appears again and again throughout Revelation.
And once you begin to see it, you cannot unsee it.
The question is no longer whether mathematics exists in the Qur'an.
The question becomes: why does Allah repeatedly call our attention to it?
