What is Sunan Abu Dawood?
Sunan Abu Dawood is one of the six major Hadith collections (Kutub al-Sittah) and a fundamental source for Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). It contains around 4,800 Hadith carefully selected from over 500,000 that Imam Abu Dawood compiled. His goal was to compile Hadith that scholars and jurists could use to derive Islamic rulings.
📜 Key Features of Sunan Abu Dawood:
Fiqh-Oriented Hadith – Unlike Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, which focus on authenticity, Abu Dawood prioritized Hadith that were essential for Islamic law.
Critical Hadith Classification – He distinguished between strong and weak narrations, and openly explained the weaknesses of certain Hadith.
Used by All Four Sunni Schools – It is considered essential reading in Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools of thought.
Contains Rare Hadith – Some narrations found in Sunan Abu Dawood are not found in Bukhari or Muslim, making it a unique contribution to the Hadith corpus.

Who Was Imam Abu Dawood?
Imam Abu Dawood Sulaiman ibn al-Ash‘ath al-Sijistani (d. 889 CE) was a Persian scholar born in Sistan, Iran. He traveled extensively in search of Hadith, journeying to Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Hijaz, Khorasan, and beyond.
📖 His Legacy & Miracles:
🔹 Teacher of Imam At-Tirmidhi and Imam An-Nasa’i – Two other Hadith giants learned from him.
🔹 Hadith Master with Over 500,000 Narrations – But he only compiled less than 1% in his book.
🔹 A Student of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal – He studied directly under Imam Ahmad, the founder of the Hanbali school of thought.
🔹 A Humble and Pious Scholar – He refused wealth and power, dedicating his life solely to the preservation of Hadith.
📜 A Famous Story of His Wisdom:
Once, a man asked him:
"Why did you not include all authentic Hadith in your book?"
Imam Abu Dawood replied:
"I only recorded the Hadith that scholars need for their rulings. If I had included everything, it would overwhelm the people."

How His Hadith Book is Being Preserved Today
📚 Moving Sunan Abu Dawood Offline & Into the Future
Like we did with Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari, Sunan Abu Dawood will be locked away from casual readers.
Only those who accompany scholars (offline and online in structured courses) will be allowed to engage with it.
Scholars must be certified in Hadith knowledge before being granted access, just like a medical degree is required before practicing medicine.
A Historic Moment – Honoring Imam Abu Dawood & Launching a New Era of Knowledge
With the celebration of Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari, we now turn our attention to another monumental figure: Imam Abu Dawood, the compiler of Sunan Abu Dawood. But this time, we are doing something different—inviting my teacher, Shaykh as-Sayyid Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, to collaborate and lead this celebration in the way only he can.
This will not just be a remembrance of the past, but the beginning of a new system—a House of Wisdom where the sacred knowledge of Hadith, Fiqh, and Tafsir will be preserved both online and offline.

We have celebrated Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari, and now we invite Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi to lead the next step in this journey—a global revival of Sunan Abu Dawood.
