The Sanctity of Life in Islam: Understanding Surah An-Nisa (4:93-94) and the Consequences of Declaring Others as Non-Muslims
The Quran is clear—killing a believer deliberately is one of the gravest sins, with consequences so severe that Allah directly condemns the perpetrator to Hell, removes His mercy from them, and prepares a tremendous punishment. Yet, in today’s world, we see Muslims killing Muslims, declaring others as disbelievers over ideological differences, and justifying violence under the false pretense of faith.
But have they read the Quran?
These verses are Allah’s direct warning to those who make such judgments and take the lives of others unjustly. They remind us that faith is not something humans have the authority to determine—it is a matter between the individual and Allah alone.

1. The Absolute Prohibition of Killing a Believer (4:93)
Arabic:
{ وَمَن يَقۡتُلۡ مُؤۡمِنٗا مُّتَعَمِّدٗا فَجَزَآؤُهُۥ جَهَنَّمُ خَٰلِدٗا فِيهَا وَغَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ وَلَعَنَهُۥ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُۥ عَذَابًا عَظِيمٗا }
Translation:
"If anyone kills a believer deliberately, the punishment for him is Hell, and there he will remain: God is angry with him, and rejects him, and has prepared a tremendous torment for him." (Surah An-Nisa 4:93, Abdul Haleem)

No scholar, leader, or group has the authority to judge someone’s faith to the extent of declaring them outside Islam.
Who is more misguided? The one being accused or the one who disobeys this clear command?

2. Judging Others Based on Greetings, Not the Shahada (4:94)
Arabic:
{ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُواْ وَلَا تَقُولُواْ لِمَنۡ أَلۡقَىٰٓ إِلَيۡكُمُ ٱلسَّلَٰمَ لَسۡتَ مُؤۡمِنٗا تَبۡتَغُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٞۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كُنتُم مِّن قَبۡلُ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٗا }
Translation:
"So, you who believe, be careful when you go to fight in God’s way, and do not say to someone who offers you a greeting of peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ out of desire for the chance gains of this life—God has plenty of gains for you. You yourself were in the same position [once], but God was gracious to you, so be careful: God is fully aware of what you do." (Surah An-Nisa 4:94, Abdul Haleem)

Even if someone only gives you a greeting of peace (Salam), you must not declare them outside of Islam.
Allah forbids accusing others of disbelief based on personal suspicion or worldly gain.

3. The Context: A Lesson from the Early Muslims
Why did this verse (4:94) come down?
A companion of the Prophet killed a man who had declared peace, thinking he was pretending. The Prophet (ﷺ) was deeply upset and reprimanded him harshly, saying:
"Did you split open his heart to see what was inside?" (Sahih Muslim 96)
This teaches us that only Allah knows what is in people’s hearts. Declaring someone a disbeliever is not our right, nor our place.

Why do so many Muslims ignore this command?
They do not read the Quran—instead, they blindly follow groups and individuals who spread division.
They focus more on labels than principles—instead of understanding the Quran, they judge others by sects, ideologies, and politics.
They are driven by worldly desires—power, influence, and control, rather than sincerity in faith.
But Allah already warned us about this.
“God has plenty of gains for you. You yourself were in the same position [once], but God was gracious to you, so be careful.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:94)

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"If a man says to his brother, ‘O disbeliever,’ then surely one of them is such (i.e., one of them has fallen into disbelief)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6104, Sahih Muslim 60)
